Thanks Art, I liked it also. I've tried quite a few of these type of shots, but never has come out how I would have liked. I'm happy for this one though.

Impressive shot considering how difficult it is to get such a shot right.

How many shots did you take before you got it right?

I did it 3 times, and looking at my files, it was my first attempt, the best one, that I've used in this example. Luck I guess.

Still a bit wobbly, but that adds some bumpy texture to the "Beam me up, scotty" textures in the lights. I've tried this before with my longer 70-300 lens, but it's never worked as well. This example was with my 17-40L, and being a much smoother action, it's easier to do.

Yeah.

3.2 second exposure.

Click, hold the focus for a second, then smoothly move it to other focal length, and hold that position for a fairly equal time. That will give the duplicate image shot. Otherwise if you want just lights going out to nothing, start wide angle, hold it for a couple of seconds, and smoothly zoom in to time it to shutter closing at the same time as you've finished the zoom in.

Possibly not. Can you change the zoom when it's shooting?

I had to live with a Sony point and shoot for over a year, before coming to an SLR.
Still got some alright results.

All the shots on that page are from a point and shoot.

We've just become parents this year, so the chances of me being able to afford anything at all, let alone a DSLR, ever again, are slim. So I'm stuck with the A40. Just bought the lens converter sleeve, perhaps if I get some money for my birthday I'll be able to spring for an actual lens!
