So you're saying that if I use my 1.4 50mm and open the aperture all the way to 1.4 and set the ISO really high I shouldn't get any trails? I'll have to give that a 30 second try when it's not so cloudy and rainy like it is tonight. :(

50mm is too long, with a 50mm you can try exposure times around 10 seconds. You need a 10-17mm lens if you want to try your luck around 30 seconds.

"Emu in the Sky"

The Emu is a constellation made with the dark nebulas that contrast against the southern Milky Way.
Taken at a very dark site from Patagonia the photo shows the Emu rising above the plateau. The head of the Emu is the coalsack nebula just next to Crux (southern Cross). The neck is made by Alpha and Beta Centauri and the body is at Scorpius.
The Eta Carina Nebula at the top is a bonus.

For Northern Hemisphere viewers the horizon (Scorpius) may be familiar, but everything will look upside down.

The Light of the Milky Way (external link) by lrargerich (external link), on Flickr

The very dark skies at the Somuncura Plateau, Rio Negro. Showing part of the Milky Way and the Magellan clouds over "La Azul" lagoon.

Taken on a moonless night it was so dark you couldn't see a hand in front of your face.

The brownish reflection at the lagoon is the opposite part of the milky way that was at my back. The landscape is lit by the Milky Way and the stars only!

That is an awesome shot Luigis! May I ask how long you held the shutter open for this and any other data you might have?

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

30 seconds for each shot, at 14mm ISO3200 on a 5DII.
Nothing special, just took the shots and stitched with PtGUI pro.
