Used 5D Mark I with 40D or new 5D MarkII only?

There are a few nice 2nd hand offerings at this moment, which made me think about upgrading
My main focus is family kids and dogs/concerts/candid. Cleaner High ISO & bigger viewfinder is why want to go FF.

My gear: Canon 40D , Tamron 17-50, Canon EF 28 1.8, 50 1.8 , 85 1.8 and 70-210 3.5-4.5 USM

There are 2 options:
1) buy used Tokina 11-16 2.8, Canon 35 1.4 , 70-200 4L IS and 5D mark I
sell 28 1.8 and 70-210 3.5-4.5
This seams a nice versatile option , for instance on holidays I could take the 40D, 5Dc, Tokina 11-16, 35L and 70-200 4L IS .

2) buy new Canon 5DII and used 35 1.4 L and 24-105 4 IS
sell 40D, 17-50, 28 1.8
This would mean I cannot buy the 70-200 4L IS, and would have to keep using the not too bad , 70-210 on the 5DII
only 1 body, but with the 24-105 , not that much lens swapping too.

Both options use up the same budget. option 1 is easier since I only have to sell the 28 1.8 ,option 2 I have to hope I can sell the 3 items for the amount I budget.
What would you guys prefer?

I'd prefer the 5DII, I didn't like the low resolution of the LCD display on the original 5D. Might seem like a minor gripe, but I want my preview image as detailed as possible to know whether I need to retake the shot or if I'm good to go. There's a lot of advantages to the 5DII over the 5D, all summarized in reviews. As far as losing the 70-200... do you use the one you have a lot? What's your go to lens? Granted it will change going from APS-C to FF, but you should be able to calculate what it will look like by taking your most used lens and multiplying it by 1.6x. I'm going to assume it's your 17-55 in which case you're looking at a FOV of 28-88. If that's the case, the 24-105/24-70 is your most important purchase.

If you can part with having a telephoto like a 70-200, until you can afford to buy one. The 5DII is a major upgrade from the original 5D. But if you use it a lot, it might be too much to give up. In which case the original 5D is still a great camera and a solid performer for any photographer.

I went from the Canon 40D to the Canon 5D MK II and never looked back. Right now I'm going to selling some of my gear to get the Canon 70-200mm f4L IS lens. I have seen some pictures with this lens and man was a blown away. I have always wanted that lens, now I have a good excuse to get it.

I'd get the 5Dii and sell the 24-105L and pick up the 70-200. Both are nice but when moving from a crop to a ff you have to account for the new fl. You might think the 24-105L is too short on the 5Dii. The 35L already covers you for the most part on the wide side. I personally didn't feel the need for two bodies as I rarely shoot weddings but when I do, I rent a backup body.

Unless you are doing something where a second body is a bonus, then 5DII. For weddings a backup is a must, and for event work its nice to have 2 bodies so you dont have to change lenses or setups, but for just personal use, or simple work then its unnecessary.

+1

You really need to determine how important having a second body with you out in the field, is, as opposed to getting more/better lenses.

that's another option indeed, just stick to 35L + 70-200 4L IS. like that , simple , just 2 lenses to basically cover everything. 35mm focal length is what I use most and I like the idea of just focussing on 1 focal length/ good quality prime.

I don't really need two body's it's just that I have bought the tamron 17-50 not that long ago. Feel like a bit of a waste, although I can resell it at quite a nice price.

Once you shoot the 5Dii and 35L+70-200L combo, you'll completely forget about the Tamron and possibly even regret not going FF sooner haha. It's that much of a difference, honestly. Night and day..

When I went from a 40D to a 5D it was a major difference in IQ. I have since gone to a 5DII. Not sure what my reaction would have been going from a 40D to a 5DII, directly.

Get rid of the Tamron 17-50. If you feel you need the same coverage on a FF, get the Tamron 28-75. Probably cost the same. Maybe someone would do a straight swap.

It doesn't sound like you need a second body so I would start concentrating on a FF and a lens lineup.

Yeah I think I'll go FF . I only just found out the used 35L I was hoping for,has been sold already :( . So i just have to be patient until there is another one offered.
I'll buy that first, maybe in the meantime the 5DmarkII will come down a little bit in price too. I can wait, patience is a virtue...aargh:)

Why don't you go through the Canon loyalty program with your 40D?

If the 40D works well, it probably makes more sense to sell it and use some nonworking dslr body to gain entry in the loyalty program.

That's true, sell the 40D buy a $30 p&s and go through CLP if I were you. That'd free up some funds for the 70-200

I'm not sure they have a Canon loyalty program in the Netherlands. But I do know there are some dealers with pretty good retail price for the 5dII. ( same price as what I read what people in the US pay trough the loyalty program)
But since my budget is tight I rather buy the 35L first, if then I have enough savings I'll buy the 5dII and later on the 70-200 4L IS.
