Depends. There are a variety of third-party hoods that may claim to work on any given lens. SOme may be as good as Canon's own, others more closely resemble cardboard and duct tape. Why not post the one you're looking at and tell us which lens you want it for?

Looks like it'll work, but I'd want to hear from someone who's actually used that particular brand. At least it's not a petal hood (since the front of your lens rotates when you focus).

I imagine if you match the model from Canon's site to the ebay seller it's probably the same mold. I've heard Canon only makes 1 hood per lens, so just match it up with their site.

I bought one for my 100 f2.8 Macro. Is it as well made as the Canon - NO. Is it as expensive as the Canon - NO! does it function as well as the Canon - YES!
Basically good quality plastic but a bit thinner - you decide - I don't regret my decision!

Do any 3rd party hoods have the felt material inside them? I've only had to buy one hood (others came with) and I went with OEM because I didn't want shiny plastic on the inside reflecting light.

i've bought a couple... A football player hit me when i had my 70-200 on my side and it cracked the lens hood... The aftermark one i found the mount area seems to fall apart quicker then the OEM one. I had the small mount plastic crack off. But really for 6$ and free shipping i don't overly care...
However i haven't been able to find one with material inside...Can't think of the name off the top of my head.
Anyways overall not a bad deal. But certainly the plastic is cheaper...

Some do some dont, its really a hit or miss..Thats why I went OEM with my hoods. But it is JUST PLASTIC, so for $6 free shipping you can buy another one if it happend to break.

Aside from build quality of the hood, I would also be concerned about the design of the lens hood. The third party hood could cause vignetting.

I've had pretty good luck with the hoods I purchased on eBay. I think most were from eBay seller fotodiox_gear (external link). The only bad one was the ET-65 hood for the 85mm f/1.8 which is the older clip-on style. That one didn't fit well until I filed it down. You can also find some good deals on used Canon hoods.

Yes they go for at least half the price of the new one
