I'm selling a lens, got a hit from craigslist. Wants to pay via paypal but want me to ship it in africa. He is willing to pay for S&H and 3% from paypal. I'm not very familiar with paypal as mode of payment that is why I'm trying to deal it locally. Is this a scam? Let me know what you guys think!

If you are uncomfortable with the sale, then don't sell it. Go with your gut. But just because the buyer is in another country don't make it a scam. Does the buyer have a confirmed paypal address?

Regardless of having a confirmed paypal address, I would never ship anything overseas, especially Africa, the scam capital of the world.

Not worth the hassle and potential headache. You could probably find another buyer.

I'm amazed at how folks could think any differently and possibly entertain engaging in these "sales".

I listed a 1D mkii on Craigslist and had a hit from a guy (in England) who was "buying it for his son" and wanted me to ship it to Africa. Big Red Flag! Needless to say, I did not reply. I sold it to a guy face to face.

I'm on craigslist all the time and everytime i post something, i make sure to mention on my add to change the subject to something different. Let say im selling my lens, i will include there "PLEASE CHANGE YOUR SUBJECT TO "LENS" so i know you are not a spam (some spam are automated). This is very effective... Another thing is, if you get an email asking you if it's available, more likely that's a spam. If you get an email and you're not sure if its legit or not. Asked for the phone number!

Good luck!

If you're in Africa (which isn't a crime) and wanted to buy a lens from somewhere else (which isn't unusual, I assume) how else would you do it?

Might be a Nigerian scammer but it might be John Smith, living in Capetown, working for some bank. It's all in the details. What makes it any more of a scam than any other PayPal transaction?

Is he familiar with the lens or does he refer to it as 'the item'? Does he want you to accept a PayPal for twice the value and return the rest in cash or pay his 'agent' with it?

Image editing and C&C always OK

Probably scam with hacked paypal account, once you get the money and ship the lens, a while later paypal will take the money back from you. Face to face only over craigslist. Period.
