I'm seriously thinking about getting the 16G 3G- my friend and client gave me the big talk about them last week at a lunch meeting, tellin me that it will do more for my photography than another lens simply from what he has experienced using his in combination with presentation to potential clients- for this it does make sense.

So is it really time for a new release? How long has the current one been out- is it likely that it's onma 18 month upgrade program like their phones?

technically this is the first generation.. all the updates have been in software. i got mine in june of this year, just in time to be on the unlimited data plan

supposedly the next generation will have the same camera setup as the iphone 4 for face time.

Yeah technically that's correct but you know how they hype things at apple.
It's my way at getting even with AT&T for all the things they charged for that I did not use or want. But you need this if you want to do that.
Since the last week in May till now, this thing has burned 25.8 gig download, 3.1 gig upload

I'd buy another lens and wait until you can run the equivalent of EOS Utility on it. :)

The iPhone is on a 12 month schedule. The iPad will probably be similar, with a release next spring, though I wouldn't expect anything revolutionary in the 2nd generation.

There will be a front-facing camera for FaceTime (I don't believe a rear camera is of any use in a tablet but it wouldn't shock me if one showed up), a gyro will be added, the RAM will likely match or beat the 512MB in the iPhone 4, the CPU will get a bump (possibly to dual-core A9 or similar), the screen will stay the same (though perhaps with a backlight that doesn't flicker at very low levels).

One thing I'm not sure about is the storage. 64GB is pretty large as it is and a 128GB model would be extremely expensive (though people like me will buy it anyway, just because it's the best and we MIGHT need it sometime).

Anyway, what you mentioned is similar to one of my uses. I export photos out of Lightroom to a set of folders that is sync'd to my iPad. I don't shoot professionally, but I use it to show my shots to friends and family rather than print them.

Jason, I agree with everything you said.

I also use it to showcase pictures, people really like watching them and flicking throughout them.

Another question to all you helpful people.

I shoot in RAW. Assuming I get by the need to download the card into the machine, is there an app that will let me view RAW files on the iPad? Anybody doing this?

As another possibility, will any Canon ZoomBrowser run on an iPad?

I'm almost certain I've read recently about an app that let's you put a wireless enabled flash card in the camera and shoot peer to peer wireless to the app on the iPad.

Found it: http://www.robgalbraith.com …age.asp?cid=7-10055-10851 (external link)

quote in case anyone decided not to read this

www.fstoppers.com/ipad (external link) shows you can directly shoot and have images sent to a hacked ipad in a matter of seconds. may be some issues with canon though

Johngault,
The iPad will allow you to view many different raw file formats, if you chose to import them to the iPad you can even edit them in some ways, depending what app you are using for that. I have a few of the apps on here but I use them to edit P&S jpegs of clients in a blogable low res jpeg. I set them in a preset native iPad photo folder. They can log into there FB, Tweet and the like directly from the pad and upload to there account.
It is a perk that they like and for many, a first look at one of the iP_d - devices.

I also occasionally send something of interest in jpeg to clients, when I happen across them.
Beats booting up the laptop logging on bla, bla. Time laptop boots iPad is done.
For editing raw I don't see iPad of much help there but for viewing raw, it works fine.

Thanks Top Hat.

I don't want to edit on the iPad. I have CS5 and ACR for that. I just want to field view RAW files on a big screen.

I'm not looking to go WiFi at this point. I don't shoot tethered so I don't miss it.
I'll buy the SD card attachment kit and be happy if I know the IPad can read Canon RAW..
