Or should I say Cyc'ed..... Had a few hours this morning waiting for some parts to come in, so I decided to build a 12 ft wide x 13 ft high straight Cyc wall. Built it with a nice 5ft radius. I got a great deal on 56ft of sheet vinyl and was thinking of just hanging it..... Then I thought about it and knew my 3 yr old would ruin the sweep in no time. Not to mention a puncture from a high heel.

Now to find the time to lay the vinyl.

Sure Dave,
I'll post a few pics first of the week when I get back to the studio....
I did not build it the conventional way. Believe it or not I made use of the free panel saw cutting service in the lumber dept at Home Depot to do all the cutting

Basically, I used layers of cheap 1/4" Luan Plywood (~$11 sheet) and laminated them. Liquid Nails is my friend. I wanted to utilize the back of the cyc for storage and did not want to sacrifice it to a unusable void.

Ok Dave,
First I figured what the radius for a 96" sheet would be ~ 61 1/8" (little over 5ft. Perfect!)

The day before I glued a stick and a half of aluminum tile edge to the concrete floor

IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1072887689_LReax-M.jpg
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1072887879_xiq2m-M.jpg

Then since I had to fur out the wall 3/4" to flush the drywall above I glued a 1x4 to the concrete wall @ 61 1/8" on center.
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1072888185_4aCU8-M.jpg

Next layed out three whole sheets of 1/4" Luan Ply ($10.97 each)
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1072888343_Peq68-M.jpg

Place and glued 90" x 24" rips on the seams to join them
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1073324801_tsra2-L.jpg
And ~ 6" rips on the two ft layout and the edge (this is backing to staple the top staggered layer of ply) Also added horizontal pieces in between for extra backing top and bottom.
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1073310795_dmzs3-M.jpg

When adding these backing strips I started them 1 3/4 from the top of the panel, so when I pushed the dried panel into place to form the radius it would catch right under the 1x 4 attached to wall and snug right up against the upper panels. First layer of upper panels I started with a 2ft panel to stagger from the bottom.
IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1072888653_AbN9B-M.jpg

The rest is pretty straight forward. The next day when the panel done throughly drying .I ran a couple thick heavy beads of Liquid nail on the tile edge and the concrete. Then I flopped the panel upright and placed the bottom in the lip of the tile edge. I pressed the panel down until the panel was centered on the 1x4 on the wall. This was easy because with the 1 3/4" spacing I left just let it snap into place forming a perfect radius.

Next I added the staggered seamed top finished layer. I glued and slipped a 1x4x12, 2x4x12, 2x6x12 and 2x10x12 under the radius area of the floor for plenty of support and after screwed glued and screwed its rock solid. I could have purchased treated material for this but I had this material on hand and with the liquid nail in between the concrete and the wood it will help prevent and wicking and will last much longer than I will need it to.

The biggest benefit of this design for me is the open storage I have. Building it the conventional way I would have have had a huge unusable void behind the sweep.

IMAGE: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1073407973_J3Kts-M.jpg

I would say with all the material it would be less than $250 easy. I had the 1x4 and other 2x on hand so it was less for me. This weekend I used fix all to transition the 1/4 ply to the cement floor and used mesh tape across the seam to prevent it from cracking.

Next, when I get some time I will cover the cyc and about 30ft in front of it with the 12ft roll of sheet vinyl and paint it white. :D

Total build time ~ 3 hours

Unbelievably cool. Can't wait to try this out.

Thanks so much for taking the time to document/share all this.

Thanks a million for following up with the construction details and photos, Jerry. Yours is certainly a unique approach to building a cyc. Looking forward now to seeing the final product once the vinyl is up and painted. For an inaugural shoot, maybe you could invite Jannie over with her vegetable collection :D

Is that your personal studio space? Looks very commodious. I'm jealous.

No problem.... Not really to unique laminating plywood to form a curve has been around since plywood was first produced. :D Having a stapler that can accept a 3/4" leg staple was key. Otherwise you are forced to use a small brad type nails or maybe some short screws... That or make a pin cushion on the underside.

Jannie is welcome to bring her veggies over anytime she wants. I had (Robert McCadden) (external link) and his whole team out last weekend for a agency model he was shooting and we all had a blast.

More like my laboratory :D This space was filled with tools and material and I have moved most of it to set up this shooting space. It works out nice and I rent it to a few trusted fellows several times a month.

I love the director's chair. Lol.

And good job! I wish I had that kind of space with a cyc wall, too.
