Hi everyone,

I've recently redone my website (www.dougsturgess.com (external link)) using a site called www.squarespace.com (external link). I've heard them talked about highly on some photography podcasts I listen to. I was a little concerned with the price/month & it's not as easy as they advertise re: building your website using their tools, but after a little work, I'm happy with it. It's definitely better than my previous flash based website.

Is anyone else using Squarespace? If so, how do you like it?

Any suggestions/comments are welcome.

Thank you.

I would lose the long copyright blah blah blah at the bottom - "Copyrighted. All Rights Reserved." covers all that.

Also you are using too many different font sizes and styles in the site. Use the controls in SqSp to make sure you have uniform fonts.

You might consider breaking down galleries into subs. instead of all the cities listed how about "Travel" then the sub galleries for those cities? Or maybe do it travel blog style telling a bit about the trips and the photos. look here: http://photogs.squarespace.com/photo-blog/ (external link)

I use SqSp and you can definitely customize the site the Nth degree.

Thanks for the comments, Rob. Regarding the fonts, I'm using the same font throughout the site. One thing I find very frustrating about SS is when I'm adding text, i.e. on the "About" page, I'm not given the choice to choose font size, i.e. 10, 14, etc. The only choice is 100%, 90%, etc. This is crazy. It's never the same with different fonts. I've found it's a crapshoot. I have to click "Save & Close" then view the text, go back in & change it if it's not consistent.

Sometimes, I've had to erase everything & start over. I still have different sized texts on the "About" page but can't figure out how to correct it.

I'm a photographer, not a computer programmer, so have found this is a limitation with SS. It doesn't work as straight forward as I was hoping. All in all, I like the interface & find it so much easier to update, etc. than my old flash-based site.

Doug,

You have a couple of things happening on your About page. You are using a list, with inline links plus I believe you have used the % font adjustments in there as well.

SS is CSS based and you can use different style sheets for different sections of the website - I have two journals on my site, Blog and Photos of the Day, each with a separate style sheet. My front page also has separate style sheet to eliminate the right side nav column on that page. If you are not familiar with the Style sheet concept it's basically a reference page for every element on the site; how it looks and behaves.

SS is very powerful and you can control every element. The link i gave you above has example CSS code you could simply paste into you Custom CSS section of your editing window. There are tons of cut and past code out there. There are a number of tutorials available as well to help you get up to speed.

If you have skype I would be happy to spend 5 minutes with you to help you out.
