Hi, I have a manfrotto 190Pro tripod with the standard 804 head, and are looking to upgrade to a ball head.
The 498RC2 looks like a popular option, however I realize that my legs would probably be a bit small for this however would it fit?
Also are there any decent cheaper third party ball heads?

Almost any head will fit yor 190 (I used to have one) as it has the standard 3/8th thread. Have a look at the TRIOPO RS series ballheads (on E Bay). I have the RS3 and it's lockup is amazing! It's only a few ounces in weight and will easily support my 600 f4 + 1d xx body. The RS3 is probably overkill for most photographers so have a look at the RS1 (170 gram) as well - it's one of the lightest heads around.
Note budget for a quick release adapter to put on top as they are a pain without one - I use a 50mm long Arca type (£20 from China) but Manfrotto 210 compatibles are cheaper.

498RC2 would be perfect for your 190. I have one on my 190cxpro3, its a good head and not too expensive.

Just had a look at the Manfrotto 498 rc2 - wow it's heavy at 610 gram (RS3 is 250! + allow another 100gr for QR adapter). A friend of mine has it's predecessor and it's very good but there is no comparison in the lockup and lack of droop on the RS3. It's a pity you don't live a little closer (this side of the planet!) so you could try mine out. A professional photographer friend of mine was using the Manfrotto Hydrostatic(expensive!) ballhead - tried my RS3 and promptly ordered two! At a recent bring and buy at my camera club I was looking VERY enviously at an ARCA ballhead - we all know what they cost! It was not for sale but the owner was proud of it's quality, smoothness and positive lock. It is beautifully made, somewhat larger, a lot heavier and 12+ times the price. He is not happy now he has tried this (RS3) cheap bit of Chinese £$*&!
Have a look on Fototip (E Bay) for pikkies and specs. If you are in doubt about the Triopo RS3 buy Manfrotto and sleep happily - they do what they say they will do and the model you quote has both pan lock and adjustable friction - the RS 3 does not, maybe important.
