Hi' with a Macro lens are they only used for close up pictures insects etc, or can you take take other pictures with the lens thanks.Mark

Most focus to infinity and can be used for normal photography.
Because of their increased focus range, they may be slow to autofocus.
They make notoriously sharp portrait lenses.

The 100L, 100/2.8 macro, EF-S 60/2.8 macro and 50/2.5 compact macro all fall into this class.

A very few, like the MP-E 65 DO NOT focus to infinity and cannot be used for general photography.

That's not 100% true. You can toss on a reverse mounted 2x T-con and it will work as a general telephoto as well. Check out this thread at Fred's place.
