Just wondering, why did you have the camera on shutter priority? The low shutter speed made the flower blur a little, and closed the aperture to f/20.

I really do not know. I am going to walk back up there and take some additional shots.

Burying my face in my hands... sorry to say, but the only thing you got right was ISO 100.

Well, I would set the aperture to the lowest value, f/4 on that lens right? And then set the shutter speed from there. And I think you will be more pleased with the results.

f/20 will produce diffraction which is undesirable. I would use a tripod and try to use an aperture that is closer to the middle of the range with f/11 typically at the end of the spectrum. Not always easy to get everything in focus at that distance. I also suspect that you are likely violating the minimum focus distance for the lens which can't be corrected with a smaller aperture. A macro lens really makes a difference as it is designed for close distance photography.

Thanks for the suggestions. yoyodunno, I did set the camera to aperture priority and f/4. The shutter speed is 1/1600 in this shot.

jetcode, you are correct that I am probably violating the focus range. I do not own a macro lens. I have just purchase this lens and trying to get use to it before I take a tour of Israel next week.

Phew! Is this latest shot taken by you? It's a whole lot different from the first one :) Good use of complimentary colour to really bring this simple flower to life on the screen.

Maybe, if I was being picky, I would say that diffused light is better for a pic like this to avoid the confusing shadows across the petals.

I normally wouldn't see anything special in a dandelion shot head-on, mid-frame in (waht looks like) mid-morning sun, but this really stands out. The colors, depth of field, and contrast are great.

Great improvement from the first shot. I like this one.

One suggestion... try to capture from an angle that we're not used to seeing. Sometimes that requires getting on the ground, but it makes things more interesting.

Try that in your travel photos as well. It's amazing what you see when you get above or below eye level.

First one I'd set fire to if it was a physical being, the second on the otherhand is excellent, great work.

The MFD (minimum focus distance) for the 24-105L is about 1-1/2 feet. In lieu of a dedicated macro lens, using extension tubes will get you closer and bit more magnification. Your second attempt is much better than the first...
