It's not really a protection thing, honestly. I'm very aware of how easy it is to defeat a watermark, I've done it just for photoshop practice.

My reasonings is solely related to branding. I produce images for the web, they must have branding attached to them. I'm a very strong advocate for creating brands. Just like Apple or Microsoft vigorously pursue branding violations, they will not allow anything to go outside of their internal mechanisms without having branding on it.

I believe the same thing. Nothing I create will be presented without branding on it. It's part of my look, my info, my style, etc... It's not something that comes off for any reason other than printing and other business benefits determined by my own needs.

It's really just as simple as that. 8-)

Congrats to the winners and HM's.

Thanks for the comments, judges. You pointed out a couple things I missed and have tried to correct a little. Can I re-enter the photo? :)

Congrats to the winners, and wow...I'm honored to even earn an HM. :)

Comments this year are optional for each judge. So if we have time to post them, we will do that.

9. Focal Princess "Fall Color"
I love market shots. This one has nice colors & nice use of dof. One thing to consider: composition. It's not quite thirds. Not quite bisected. Just has an unsettling comp for me. Otherwise nice job.

9. Focal Princess "Fall Color"
Love this shot. In fact I picked it as my HM this week. :D The focus on the onions (I think they’re onions) is great – but the bokeh is PERFECT! It’s blurred nicely – but still gives great context – a person shopping from a local vendor at the market. I think you could sell this one. Or at least entice someone to hang it at their market. Seriously. Excellent job! (One small suggestion: crop a bit of the blurred greens off of the far left and a bit off the top – they don’t add to the image). And I have to mention the colors – WOW! Greens, purple, red, orange, brown – you’ve got it all! Nice job.

Thank you both! :) It helps lots and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with this week.

Hey Permie,

Maybe I missed this, but don't the rules have a "date window" that photos should be taken within? I dont see the actual Rule in the top post here, and it seems like it would be good to put it in just so they will be complete...?

Or am I a dork and have missed something entirely?

It's in the first complete paragraph, Tony.

The basic premise is to get out and shoot during the week and post your best photo here. We will however allow any photo taken from April 1, 2010 to now as a valid entry.

I have a couple dumb questions:

  1. I have never participated in the forum photo competitions before, but it sounds interesting. I assume that all of the regulars know what SMWYG stands for, but I have not been able to ferret out the meaning so far. Can someone toss me a bone? Who knows, there might even be another person hoping that someone else will ask the question.
  2. As I understand, we need to keep the EXIF data intact, but the discussion about watermarking brought up another question in my mind. My name is in the EXIF data as well as in the IPTC metadata. While not containing much personally identifiable information other than camera S/N, there is also other metadata such as the Camera RAW data (at least, I probably won't submit any images containing DICOM data ;) ). I have no idea how I would or even should remove any of this data once it becomes a part of the image. The only option that I can envision is to save the image for the web and then include a list of the shooting data). Am I over analyzing this?

Bill, SMWYG stands for "Show me what you got". On question #2, I'll defer to Permie...;)
