Very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on these two. Thanks!

Technically both shots are good: light, focus. But neither has something that makes it really interesting. In the first one the colours are not (yet) autumnlike enough to be exiting. In the second the fence it too much the same in colour from the trees and the leaves on the ground to stand out.
Sorry.

Had there been, say, a person leaning over the rail looking to our left, that would make a big difference.

Or some kind of object near the rails.

Not much going on in either one to really hold interest. Out of the two, I prefer the second one.

I don't know what the hell is going on but both of your images looks awesome when viewed outside of potn and flickr, they have a colour and vibrancy that by comparison makes these look very poorly.

Well, you work with what you've got, huh. I agree with the above posts on #1 that it needs a touch of something more for interest. Very well done, though - looks like a beautiful place to enjoy the moment.

I don't buy the comments on #2 that it lacks interest, and I think it's quite a nice photo in-and-of itself. Sure, it would be magic with someone playing in the leaves right there, but heck, I still put it at a 7.5, As-Is. Maybe a touch smaller aperture would improve the contrast of the fence against the trees as it fades into the background. Or maybe just take your boots off and toss them on the ground near the fence (?).

First, thanks to each of you who took the time to respond. I 'm in agreement that there is nothing special about the compositions. Something, however, caught my eye with the wood fence. I hope to revisit that spot and give it another try soon. Otherwise, I'll learn from these and keep working at it.

I'm struggling with this myself. I'm processing all RAW images in LR3 and then exporting directly to flickr. In LR I see the processed images as I want them but I'm seeing a serious drop in IQ when they are converted jpeg. As mentioned the colors appear muted and darkened. I'm not sure what's going on. I've had to readjust the export settings several times on a few of them to get better quality.

Are you consistently within the same colour-space: like sRGB?

The second photo has a tremendous amount of potential. It is an interesting shot.
The way the sunlight hits the middle posts, makes them look like they are translucent. It is very nice.

I wanted to see what it looked like with the first fence post straightened, rather than tilted and with the vibrancy pushed a bit with curves, and by adjusting the color channels. So I did the above stated edits and increased the saturation on the red, yellow and green color channels. It really brought out the orange autumn colors and the moss on the fence posts.

Here is what the edits came out looking like:

You know what might look pretty cool in this shot?

Two pairs of cowboy boots on the ground, and hats draped over a couple of posts.

His + Hers

To add a mystery line to the shot - LOL.

:D

Like them both, they both lead me on to wonder what is, round the corner, at the end of the fence, they speak!

Just me though

There ain't gonna be enough time to capture all the beautiful thing in the world, but I'm getting them one by one...
