Has anyone used this non-Canon, less expensive hood?

"GSI Super Quality Lens Hood for CANON EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, and EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lenses - Functions Exactly as the Canon ET-67, Provides Protection from Light and Impact"

It is available on the Amuzon site. I wondered how well it works, fits, and if it is really identical to the Canon hood.

You will most likely not use the hood when shooting Macro, but it's nice to have for those times when you use the lens for non macro stuff. I use the Canon hood.

If it's the same length and diameter, it should be fine.

Some people find the hood for the 100 macro a bit too long. The 60 macro hood is shorter and fits the 100 perfectly.

The Canon hood for 100/2.8 USM macro is huge. Far larger than necessary for shading the lens.... It's probably designed that way primarily so that it can be reversed for storage.

Any knock-off would presumably be the same size.... huge.

There are many inexpensive, generic or third party 58mm screw-in lens hoods for short-to-moderate telephotos that will fit the lens just fine and do their job quite well, but can't be reversed on the lens for storage. I've got both the Canon hood and a used Tamron hood (lens unknown) that fits and works fine. I'll have to look into the EF-S 60mm mac hood sometime.

I've got a cheap knock-off of Ebay and it works perfectly... Even has the cushion padding that absorbs light! It was only 7 euro's!

Great tip.

I should have thought of that before buying the correct hood! However, for macro I normally use a ringlight flash (it stays mounted on the lens almost all the time) that rules out using a hood. I haven't used the lens for portraits yet, so the original hood should be fine.

Why are all you people so smart? ;)

I bought a JJC ET-67 hood for my 100mm. Got it from Amazon.com for about $10. Works fine, and is reversible for storing on the lens.

Shooting on a crop, wouldn't you want an even LONGER hood, rather than short? You likely wouldn't want a hood to block light during macro shooting either way.

Shooting on a crop you can use a longer hood - it doesn't mean you'd want to use a longer hood.

Yes indeed. I have both these macros and the hood for the 60mm is perfect for both.

The lens is long, as is. Does the hood from the 60 bayonet on, like the other Canon hoods I have?

+1 on this. If you are getting the non-L 100 macro, consider the hood for the 60 which fits perfectly but is a bit shorter.
