Adobe Media Encoder (Mac) CS4 - how to export to AVI?

I've got Adobe Media Encoder CS4 for Mac. I'm trying to convert a 640x480 30fps .MOV file from my IXUS 980IS to PAL 720x576 @ 25fps as an AVI file.

If I select format H.264 and preset PAL DV High Quality it appears everything is as close to what I want/need except the output file format is MP4 and I can't find anywhere an option to make it AVI.

Did some searching and it appears only the Windows version of Med Enc has this option.

How can I get AVI file output? I have the full Adobe CS4 Suite, but not that familiar with the video editing components.

H.264 is wrapped in mp4 cause it is specced to use with mp4. http://en.wikipedia.or​g/wiki/H.264

You can use DV AVI though.

Thanks mate, but there is no DV AVI option that I can find. Any ideas?

I actually don't know if the Mac version has that at all. The Windows version has it under Windows AVI and I also have a Panasonic DV codec that probably won't work on a Mac. The Quicktime format with the DV codec works with pretty much everything so I would use that.

I'm stumped. Doesn't appear to be a simple way to do it on Mac. Had a bright idea that if I encode it as MP4, or even MPEG2, I could import into Windows Movie Maker and export from there to AVI.

Windows Movie Maker didn't have the required codec for MPEG2, although it did recognise the filetype.

It can't be this complicated to export to an AVI, can it? It's such a common format!

Yup, it shouldn't be that difficult...but Mac doesn't support AVI in general. You can convert MOV to AVI using a QuickTime (pro version) player on Windows. I wasn't able to do it on a Mac since I don't have a pro version on Mac.

Thanks for confirming that. I've found a Windows tool that looks like it can convert MP4 to AVI. Am seeing how that goes now.

It didn't work. What to do...

Export it as MOV and when it is done, rename the format to AVI. It worked for me.

Why do you need it in an AVI container anyway?

It's the required format of the place I want to submit my video to. Was very specific.

Sorry mate, I didn't try it. Based on my understanding, they are completely different file formats. Just renaming a file does not change the format or contents of the file.

You can't take a JPEG, rename it with .CR2 file extension and it becomes a RAW file.

Actually, you're wrong.

MOV and AVI is the same thing, just that AVI works in Windows and MOV in Mac... Like I said, it worked on mine, I renamed the MOV to AVI many times.

Actually you are wrong. It might work when renaming, but the container formats have different specifications. It doesn't magically transform the specs to another container.
