I am using a hard wired remote to shoot soccer. This includes a 7D and either a 16-35, 2.8 or a tokina 10-17 3.5-5.6 (fisheye). My questions are the following:

1. I have tried manual focus, what do others use for their focal point
2. What is a minimum aperture to obtain adequate DOF given variability of these shots. Note that a lot of my shooting is at night, so a stop makes a huge difference in terms of available shutter speed even at max ISO
3. What would you use for camera placement?

Any other yips would be appreciated. I have struggled with which lens to use since the 16-35 is obviously a better lens, but at 1.6 crop it only covers half of the goal given where I put the camera.

A few of my remote shots are at the following address:

1. I typically focus on someone standing between the penalty spot and 6 yard box. That eliminates most of the netting and turns it into a fokeh instead of keeping it in focus cluttering my image.

2. I use 4-5.6 depending on lighting.

3. Before insurance I stuck my camera in the middle. After I got insurance I put it behind one of the two posts angled in towards the goal mouth to get a nicer angle.

Here is an Idea: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=870059

1. Same as Ajaffe. Sounds about right. you have live view so that may be your best bet for focusing.

2. Well, as always, it depends on your focal length but f4-f8 is usually sufficient in all cases.

3. See link above. If you want I can post some set up shots as well.

What is interesting is that they let you hang it up there. Usually I get smacked by a referee who wants to flex his power and have to stick it behind the net.

As long as I have asked before hand, no one objects. Ill try and find my shot of the set up to show how it was monted. It isnt in the way at all.

I appreciate the comments, I have tried using a magic arm as opposed to a gorilla pod behind the goal. But the goal posts are too big for the clamp. What have used?

Definitely interested. They always say no if I ask to put something inside the goal. Do you stick it on the outside of the triangular bar that holds the net back and then point the lens through one of the net holes?

How about hose clamps?

I thought that was what you did. Very cool. Any list of equipment there? I see a xxD body and a 17-40 f4L? What kind of clamps? POTN strap?

I got insurance on my 50D and 17-40 now so I am going to try that.

3 avenger super clamps
2 manfrotto variable friction magic arms (one with a base)
40d
16-35 2.8 II
Safety cables ( There is a pretty cool 3 pack of steel cables that I have been using that I love. I think they are lowell)
Gaffers tape

Triggering:
Cybersyncs + pre release cable. My first remote set up gear- see my blog on more info for that.

Nice. I am doing the gorillapod setup with a calumet wireless setup and getting decent behind the goal shots but the netting is definitely still pretty distracting. Do you think the pre-release is worth it? I have found that I just fired my camera a few seconds early to wake it up in case it is asleep and haven't had issues yet. But I can definitely see the advantage.

i guess. I just happen to like my pre release more than a typical shutter release.
