Interesting concept. How did you light the subject in the first one?
I don't know how you would do it but if the blades of the windmill would show up more it would be more dramatic.

Nice job on "pinpointing" the stars and avoiding star trails...

Thanks!

Rob, these were high ISO, long exposure and I used a flash to light paint the blades. The blades were a good 100 feet above me, so it was hard to truly get good light on them, not to mention that the whites would get cooked on the versions where I used to much flash. It was sort of a happy median, just enough but not too much, etc....

Can you give the rest of the EXIF info? I'm curious how you avoided the star trails with the long exposure as argyle mentioned.

Thanks

What exif would you like? (most of the exif should be in the photos)

5DM2
16-35L II @ 16
Manual
ISO 4000
ƒ5
70 seconds
Auto WB (adjusted in post)
Pattern meter mode

580EX II used to light paint subject.

I use an exif viewer plugin in Safari and Firefox. There's one available for Chrome too.

Just click on any photo and if there is Exif, you should see it. I don't think the forums here to anything like this (It'd be nice if they did!)

thanks...I'll find one for Chrome since it's what I use normally ..

So with a 70 second exposure there are no star trails? I thought for sure that long of an exposure would show such..

Hi Todd;

I like the pictures but I find too much noise. I would have used a lower ISO despite showing the startrails.

Using ISO 250 you would have needed 1120" (18 minutes) which is a normal time for a nocturnal shot. Tou should be more patient:)!

I think it depends on what you're going for, Agustin. If I was going to go for trails, I'd use settings such as your suggestion. I don't think the noise is really too much of concern for these, especially when printed.
