That 30mm is AWESOME....
Very impressive plane. worked on A-10's at DM in 90-91 before getting out of USAF in 91.

you can shoot hundreds of pics of the Hog, but where you get to see that baseball sized piece of lead coming out of the gau.....epic!

Glad these are well received.

The GAU-8 Avenger is like nothing you've ever seen, heard or felt. There are four distinct sounds associated with an A-10 strafing pass:
1) Aircraft Engines (the A-10 is fairly quiet but you can hear it coming)
2) Rounds Going Transonic (a very distinctive and frightening KEEEERACK!)
3) The heavy "BURRRRRRAP" of the gun being fired
4) Rounds impacting target (like a string of firecrackers going off)

And yes, you really do hear 2 before you hear 3...

@ Ryan: The target was probably another 200 yards beyond the tower as you look at it in #1... They had these long rows of tires painted white which were the "Foul Line" for each strafing chute. Pilots are supposed to be off the trigger and coming off target before reaching these lines (aircraft moving from camera right to camera left):
