The Right Time...

I want the 20D. I need the 20D! At least I like to think so I just want to get it at the right time, especially for financial reasons.

I was just away in the field fighting in a fictional war for 9 days, and returned to notice the announcement of the 5D. I would presume that the price for the other cameras might drop as a result. Is anyone familiar with Canon's trends for this? I did some brief reading in other posts that there could be rebates as soon as October.

As a University student, I have to keep a strict budget. Tuition and books for the first Term are due at the end of September, so after that I can see whether I can afford the 20D... and if I can, I'm very tempted to buy it.

I'm looking at a period of October - January as my goal of purchasing the 20D, so I'm curious as to how much the price could/will drop by then?

just been to my local store Jessopps UK and they have quoted me £999.00 for body only , they will price match locally but claim the 20d in another local store has just gone up in price!!!

You're not the only one wondering what to do. Whilst basically very happy with my 300D, I feel I ought to sell it sooner rather than later if I'm to get a decent price. However, there's so much uncertainty about the future of the 20D and its successor that I'm reluctant to go ahead and sell my 300D and buy a 20D and I'm left doing nothing.

I don't want to pay in the region of £1000 for a 20D and then to find prices tumbling shortly afterwards because of a successor. We only need recall what happened to 10D and 300D prices after the release of the 350D.

I always thought that the 20D would be my next DSLR until the announcement of the 5D. For me, the purchase of a full framed body would be almost impossible to afford up till now. I have always wanted a FF body but just thought it was 'pie-in-the-sky' dreaming. The perceived features of the 5D seem to fit my needs and expectations so now all I need... is a new job. Lost mine several months ago... great timing, huh? So until more stable funds come in, the 5D will be a 'pie-in-the-sky' dream also. I'll survive until then with my 300D.

My personal opinion and observation... Canon equipment (particularly the DSLRs) tend to hold their value for quite some time. If ebay prices are any indication or general barometer, look at the prices for the "older" 10D and original 1D series cameras - they have held onto their price for a remarkably long time considering that their replacements have been out quite awhile.

I wouldn't expect a big price drop ($400+) until a year or so.

The 20D prices will NOT fall as a result of the 5D announcement.

Although both lenses are targeted at amateurs (as opposed to professionals), they serve very different means.
As someone stated, the 5D is the Baby 1Ds, while the 20D is the Baby 1D.

New releases on those two cameras normally do not affect each other very much, although they are much closer (1.3 vs. 1.6 as opposed to 1.0 crop). One is more targeted at sports/action photographers, the other at studio/portrait/landsc​ape photographers.

if you're working with such a tight budget why not just get the 10D!?!

I agree but, leaving aside the 30D, don't you think there will be a replacement for the 20D either later this year or early next year?
