After taking my grandkids trick or treating last night my grandson hooked his foot in the strap of my 7d that was sitting on the end table. It went crashing to the floor and busted the 550EX off the camera. It broke the 2 little plastic pcs that slide into the hot shoe.

I'm guessing that Canon can fix this. Has anyone had to have the same problem fixed and if so do you remember what it costs? :(

Before it's said, yes I ordered a 580EX II this morning, but I want to keep the 550EX for my 1D.

They seem to have a different price for every repair they do. This probably falls in the one hour minimum realm....so about $100 if there is nothing more serious. Send it in, they won't do anything without giving an estimate and getting an approval. If it is too costly, they can box it up and ship it back to you. If the unit still works as a flash, you could always make your own mount to use it as a slave.

If you are at all handy with a screw driver (or know someone who is) you can probably get the replacement part from Canon for under $20 and do it yourself.

You may want to post this (or request it be moved) in the "Small Flash" sub-forum, lots of smart guys over there can give you solid advice.

Thanks! I wasn't sure where to post it at. Looks like it's a $120 minimum charge. Got my repair number and gonna ship it to them.

Thanks Woolbur for your suggesion also!

I dropped the 550EX off at UPS on Monday to ship it to Canon. It's been repaired and supposed arrive tomorrow by FedEx. Cost $120. I sent my 100-400mm earlier in the summer and it was gone for a month. Just FYI only...

I don't think I really wanna know...
After Harcosparky turned me on to the part on Ebay I'm pretty sure I could have fixed it myself. But I was an hour late in reading his post.

I'll know next time. I will addd that I'm happy with Canon for the quick turn around though.
