What's with companies these days?

What is with companies these days and naming their products numbers.

You have the
Canon 20D
Nikon D70
Ford F 150
Chrysler 300 M
Moterola i90

And so on and so on. What they can't actually come up with something better? I mainly find this to be a beef because of Camera makers.

Canon First with D30 then D60 then 10D then 20D and soon 5D. Might be a stupid question or even a stooopid question but couldn't they have come up with something better then the 5D? A 5D makes it sound older then all of the other cameras.

Maybe its just me. Sorry for the rant.

Just a thought - All the good words for product names are already owned by other companies. . .

Maybe or maybe not. Its like the use of X these days. Thats everywhere too.

Numbers sound more "technical" and so are cooler!

Very important when selling things that people don't really need, and never knew they wanted untill someone with a degree marketing suggested it.


But would you buy a 20D if it was called the "Canon Supershot"?

Moreover its because you can't trademark just a number nor just a letter. There are lots of names for things, numbers and letters are easier to use because they just tack them on to the already tm'd mfgrs name, hence the "Canon 20D". Couldn't name another thing that, but someone could use the 20D again, as in the Chrysler 20D(just an example) As Moppie states its a marketing thing, most low end items get a name, high end stuff gets a letter or number or both, it just sounds cooler. And there is also the other side of things, someone that mfr's only highend things can do what ever they want because the mfr name is synonomous with quality, i.e.Ferrari. If they made a car and called it the "LippySnap" people would buy it cause its a Ferrari. As far as naming convention, it usually has to do with something during the R&D stage of creation. I understand your rant and its a legit one too, but as wee people we get what they give us.........Joe

I can't wait to buy the new Canon Tigerclaw (5D) and the Zarathustrian Death Ray (24-105mm).

I don't know, German car Manufacturers started with it. I kinda like it.

Mercedes had the letter as the class and the digits as the displacement. (E320: e-klasse, 3.2L v6)
BMW had the first digit as the class and the trailing digits, MOST of the time. (330Ci: 3-Series, 3.0L i6, Coupe)

Canon I think is the strangest company with their names, fastly followed by Nikon when it comes to number names.

Canon because their soon to be most advanced number camera is a 5D which is the lowest number yet you would think that 10D, 20D D30 or D60 would be the more advanced. Never mind their World names for the same cameras. Now what will follow the 5D in 2-3 years? the 3D?

Why not the XSM (Xtreme Super MoneyGrabber?) Its a mystery. Good thing most people who are in the market for a DSLR do a bit of research before buying or they ask "What camera should I buy?" which I always answer with a Rebel XT since they have to ask, then anything more would be overkill cause they obviously don't know anything.

Ever notice how many companies that have a 3 named product always seem to skip 4 and go straight on to 5? Mazda did it. Canon G series did it.
