I currently have a Nikon D40 and I think I'm ready to take it to the next step and get a better Camera and Lens. I would like to stick with Canon. My Budget is around $1000 not including the extra lens I would like to buy. So Far I had the Canon Rebel T2i in mind along with the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens.

What do you guys think?

Would you recommend anything better??

It will mostly be for all around type pictures and lots of portraits of my newborn.

I think the T2i would be great for that

Is video a requirement? If not, I much prefer the XXD line. A 50D would be a good option for you. I'm not sure of the street price of a 60D.

I dont need the video but its a nice option :D .. Is there a big difference from the t2i to the 60d?

Is the t2i too much of a beginner camera?

I've never really enjoyed the rebels as much as I have the XXD cameras. I think the controls and layout on the XXD line. I also like the more solid build of the of the 40/50D over that of the rebel. Generally the current offering of the rebel and the XXD line are similar in terms of sensor output and IQ, the differences are in handling and controls. I havent handled the 60D but it seems to be more like the rebels than the old XXD line in some ways. You can make great images with both cameras so I may be overthinking it a bit.

Yes, the 60D is a new offering from canon. I think it represents a realignment of the categories. Initially canon had 3 levels of camera. Rebel, XXD, and the pro series (1D, 5D). Beginning last year with the introduction of the 7D and now with the 60D, they are rearranging that a bit. The 7D is more than the XXD line, but near the price point, so they took the 60D a bit closer in terms of the features of the rebel line. It should be a good camera, they just left off a few things that I find essential that most people likely wont miss.

I have used the T2i w/85mm f/1.8 combo, and the images they produce together are nice! The 85mm's FOV on a crop will take you a little bit to get used to if you mainly use zooms.

What lenses, flashes, etc., do you have for your Nikon? Why are you not upgrading within the Nikon line? Have you considered the D3100? Or, for just a bit above your budget, the D7000?

I just have what came with the kit, not extras. I was going to buy a lens for it but with what I was going to spend I rather just sell my D40 and get into something better. I have been hearing a lot of good things about the Canon line...

There's nothing wrong with sticiing with Nikon if you're used to the system already :)

however, if you were considering an upgrade on the Canon side, i would also consider looking at the 50D or 60D series.

going to a rebel will be a bit 'lateral' in my opinion from your Nikon...sure it'll be better as it's newer (with the T2i) but you're probably wanting to buy a body that you can grow into more. not saying that a Rebel will be outgrown very quickly but you might like the xxD bodies better.

take a look at used 50D's if your budget allows. they're quite cheap now since the 60D has been released. funny though, my local camera shop is selling the 60D for cheaper than the 50D thanks to Canon Rebates...

good luck on your decision :)

The D7000 is between the 60D and the 7D. Closer to the 60D in price; IMO, closer to the 7D in features, etc. Caveat: "IMO" is purely from reading; no hands-on with either.
