I am sure this has been asked before so please accept my apologies in advance.

is it beneficial to take more exposures at smaller increments when shooting HDR? I know there will be overlap but will the smaller increments between exposures allow for more detail?

You're right. It has been asked, even recently. Complicated answer. Check other posts.

In theory, as long as you capture all the dynamic range in the scene it is irrelevant how many exposure's you use. However, in reality the HDR processing software handles more exposure's better than fewer sometimes. It really depends on the scene and the way the software manipulates the multiple exposure's. So it's a trial and error type situation. I usually use +2,0,-2 if I think 3 will be enough. If it's not, I will take more to cover the dynamic range.

When shooting flowing water I like to do 1-stop increments these days, as I tends to make the rapids look cooler imo. 2-stops between exposure's is to much of a difference for the HDR processing software to figure out sometimes and you end up with gray areas in the rapids. SO in that case I would go for 1-stop increments.

Here is a link to some of my HDR tutorials if you'd like to check them out. It's all free ;)
