Hi all,

I am building a website on my own and thought I would ask what is everyone using for a photo gallery for my portfolio? I was thinking of going with lightroom but it is not uploading correctly for some reason so maybe I thought there was a better solution. Please let me know what is out there, I would love for it to be free too. I purchased my domain name and am hosting through godaddy.com. I have a main site that is not finished. I have a link that says portfolio, I want this to be directed to a photo gallery.

Thanks!

It's a good question. Definitely have a good long look at Gallery2 and Gallery3. I know there are a lot of skins for Gallery2. I tried Gallery3 back before it was even in Beta and I moved on, but it's come a long way since then.

Piwigo was mentioned here recently (OK, it was mentioned by its founder) and I might check it out.

I'm currently using Coppermine but I'm not thrilled with it. It's almost like the developers aren't photo fans.

I'd like to find one that works and looks pretty much like Smugmug or Flickr but hosted on my own site. It's all about how the album looks, and those sites have a clean, non-distracting look.

What is gallery2 and gallery3? Are these sites? I will check out Piwigo and also Coppermine and see if it's something that looks good. I am also looking for the similar gallery. I like the clean lines flickr has. Thank you for the great suggestions.

Oh come on. I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, but info at that level is easy to find.

I took another look at the Coppermine themes and downloaded two darker ones. They're not like Smugmug or Flickr, but they are a lot cleaner than the default theme. Here's my site wrapped in those two:

http://www.largiader.com …ndex.php?theme=curve_dark (external link)
http://www.largiader.com …dex.php?theme=dark_velvet (external link)

In the default theme I have removed the header so it just starts with Home and Login, but I haven't gotten around to doing that for these yet.

HOWEVER. Don't consider this any particular kind of endorsement for Coppermine. I'm still going to look at alternatives.

I was just asking what those were. These forums are for discussion on different subjects not somewhere to call someone out. It's ok though no big. I will check these out, they all kind of seemed cluttered and kind of wanted a more basic layout. I will keep checking around. Thank you for the great input. Appreciate it!

I didn't mean to sound like I was 'calling you out' but rather just giving a good-natured reminder that basic "what is this" stuff is only a search away. Especially for someone who is capable of installing and maintaining an online gallery, which is how I interpreted your question. BTW you should install it yourself rather than use the auto-install feature from your host, since the host installer is often out of date.

And yes these albums can look cluttered, although Gallery3 was designed as a much simpler version after Gallery2 got really feature-bloated. Also, if you're looking for a pro portfolio, I've noticed that those usually don't have a large number of items so the overall look may be simpler with only 4 or 5 albums in there.

I'm a hobbyist, not a pro, and my gallery is general-purpose with many albums in it. Might not be the same as what you're looking for. Of course, many pros seem to have custom-built galleries.
