Hmm, I really like that idea. I may give that a try, but with a fine paint brush. A toothpick might be a bit too uneven for larger scars.

I did not have a small paint brush. ;)

Im legitimately thinking about wrapping my 1D in black vinyl. Got mine used from adorama rated as a "V" and I hate seeing the marks beneath canon etc.

That's pretty bad--but considering the age... I think I'd be more interested in the shutter count. I don't care how old it was, I'd never let one of my bodies reach that level of damage. The paint on the mag bodies don't just chip off--it's impact, scrape/scratch/abrasion related. I'd be upset too if I had to continually stare at it :)

I don't like that vinyl idea--it'll come out looking cheesy. I like the previous spray-paint idea, especially if it matches well enough. With touch-up paint, you can usually cover a mark area, allow it to dry slightly, and use some isopropyl alcohol to blend the area. I've made scratches on L-lenses completely 100% disappear that way.

I choose rustoleum for two very important reasons, one, rust protection even though I do not think they can rust, but it is tough paint, and two, I had some. : )

Like actorlife I also bought that tube style touch up paint and found out the black on the 1Dseries camera is between a glossy black and the flat black which is the one that I got .

Hmm, seems everyone likes flat black. I'll try a pen for some brassing on my filter ring and see how it looks...

Trouble is, most restoration jobs end up badly and merely accentuate the dings /flakes. I can't be bothered to touch-up the 'brassing' on my 1Dc.

But were I to do so, I'd -
~ use 0000 grade steel wool to lightly feather the edges of the flaws and 'key' the surface
~ carefully de-grease with a solvent
~ carefully apply model enamel (black glosss) with fine camel brush
~ three thinned layers. Let dry thoroughly between applications.
~ matt down the gloss with the same fine steel wool and blend into original finish.

It can be done, but generally is more trouble than it's worth.

Go check out hobbie stores. Model paint should be able to match your body colour and not come in liter buckets. Or you can call the closest canon repair center.

While I am not certain that canon techs won't keep body-paint handy, I can confirm that Canon Parts does NOT sell black paint--only the L-lens mix.

is it a camera or a museum piece that needs to be restored? use the damn thing!

I agree.. Allow your 1D to have some street cred,, scars and all!!

You could always BS to the chicks on how your 1D got the bruises.. You never know,, you might get lucky ;)

The black finish is not exactly the best in the world, I think its poor of Canon not to provide it for sale.

Probably Canon does not sell black paint because it is enamelled/baked on paint to make it more durable than normal paint.

Since you obviously can't bake it on it will never hold, so no sense in selling black paint either.
Probably the white paint is just paint and not enamel.

(Just my guess :) since my Olympus OM-2 was enamelled black.)
