I've been photographing this family for five years now! It's truly a joy to watch these kids grow up. The little girl wasn't even around for the first three sessions!

I'm still working on the images, but I really wanted to share this one with you for now. I love their smiles. Thanks for looking, and your comments are always appreciated.

Tim

EDIT: Below is one more for now. I still need to work on the whole set. Thanks!

EDIT: I just posted the rest of the set here...

That's a lovely photo Tim. To my eye I would have liked to see a little bit less headroom, but it's amazing nevertheless.

Thanks Dave! Much appreciated. I left a little extra headroom to allow the darker branches to frame the picture, but I definitely have some room to play with.

Nice shot Tim! Can't wait to see more. I've always been a big fan of your work. I'm assuming that the lighting for this pic is the same as most of your other post? 580 thru shoot-thru umbrella? Or is this one all natural light?

Lovely photo as usual!! If you did use 580 thru umbrella, how do you usually trigger the flash? and do you manually adjust the exposure? or remote ettl? Your subjects are always so well-lit and it would be great to learn from you. Thanks!

Jamie, erock, and joon, thank you all very much!

For this session, I went all natural light and no reflectors, not that this was my first choice, but because The Huntington Library won't allow all that stuff inside the grounds (unless of course, you schedule a formal session). I just tried to find the best light (and shade) possible throughout the afternoon. I was facing south, so the sun was backlighting the scene from camera right. The concrete helped to reflect some light up.

Joon, when I do use my ocf, I'm pretty much in ETTL and adjust EC as needed. My outdoor ocf set up is very simple!

Thanks for the info! May I ask you one more question? How do you do ETTL when doing ocf? I'm using Elinchrom Skyports, but they don't allow me to trigger via ETTL. I always have to manually set the exposure, but I would much rather use ETTL too. Would you happen to know which trigger sets allow ETTL? Or a good recommendation for using ETTL when doing ocf? Thanks!

Hey man! How are you?

No new lens. This was the 135L. If you're referring to the sample shots I just posted in the 50L forum, that was borrowed for the day. I may have to put it on my list :) I just wish focusing was as quick and accurate as my 35L, but it definitely produces beautiful pics!

For these kinds of outdoor shots, I just use the Canon wireless system and use an onboard 580 to trigger the off camera 580. It's reliable for the most part.

I have the original Radio Poppers, but they were so inconsistent, so they've been hiding in my bag. I've heard mixed reviews of all the current ETTL capable triggers (Radio Popper, Pocket Wizards, etc.), so I've just been sticking with the built-in wireless. It gets the job done for my purposes.

Thanks again for the information. So, you're just using onboard 580 as master and off camera 580 for slave? Just out of curiosity, have you tried using the ST-E2 to trigger the off camera 580?

Yes, and for most applications, I just set the master to not fire.

I've only used the ST-E2 a couple of times. Back when I was considering it, I just decided to get another 580 to give me more versatility. Sometimes when I use ocf indoors, I can bounce the onboard flash to add a little extra light.

I don't know this first hand, but some have said that the ST-E2 is not as consistent outdoors.
