You can use the iPhone app Starwalk to visually see where the Milky Way will rise and travel.

For dark skies, an exposure I like is ISO 3200 f/3.2 for 33 seconds, roughly. Then there are plenty of tricks you can use in post to make the Milky Way pop. For example, try boosting the Blue luminance channel in ACR. Pump up Clarity at bit. Drop color temp to roughly 4800. Etc.

But the main thing is to find a dark place with clear skies.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the info.....
The ironic thing about all of this is that "YOU" are actually the person that got me interested in this after I saw a couple of your AMAZING VIDEOS about a year ago. I joined your Forum and tried to cram as much info as I could because I was going to be taking a trip in just a couple of days to some dark skies in West Texas. This is eventually what I came up with. Please tell me what you think, it would mean a lot.....

Well anyway, while I was there, I did learn about the iPhone App called StarWalk and immediately downloaded it when I returned. So now, I'll be a little better prepared when I go back in about 6 more months.....

Thanks Again,
-Mark

I would like to thank you all for posting and sharing what you know! I am looking forward to trying some of this out when I can get to darker skies in upstate NY and then out west this fall. :)
