Stunning shot - excellent timing. One in a thousand

mjm80, thank you for the kind words.

I saw this thread last year - but I am glad someone dug it up again.

I few weeks ago I was walking down the street when I thought I saw this photo out of the side of my eye... I turned around and it was the same affect, but not the same photo.

For a second I thought someone stole your photo and used it in their ad -- but you are safe!

Thanks, Timber. Coincidentally, I received a PM from a forum member here, someone with ZERO posts, from Singapore, asking me to use the photo. I politely declined. I did appreciate him asking though.

That is one very nicely times photo. Did you ask her to do it or was it just a candid shot? :)

I wish it were a candid, but my timing isn't that good. We tried it a few times before. This was the second of a three shot burst.

Mark...

I haven't praised this image and your skills for at least a week.

This is a stunning photo, technically beyond the abilities of mere mortals.

Please post another one now.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Why, thank you. High praise indeed from my FAVORITE moderator. Wait, is that an oxymoron, a favorite mod? ;)

OK STOP THE INSANITY! Sheeeesh, we could hardly get Mark to shut up about this shot in NYC, the guy just kept going on and on and on all damn day about it! And woe to me when I mentioned that I had never seen it or beheld its majesty! YOU GUYS HAVE CREATED A MONSTER! He forced me to accept that he would PM ME ABOUT IT AND HE DID! And I'm FORCED to comment on it under penalty of him PMing me once a day until I do! <beeep> damn theres another PM from big head MDJAK about his once in a lifetime shot!

Just kidding. =)

I'm helpless to agree with the hordes, this is a great shot and he should be proud! The question is, is this his 'Migrant Mother', or 'Afghan Girl''? The one shot Mark shoots that he will be ever remembered for, no matter what his other accomplishments? Or will we ever be treated to such near perfection (and marvel at how the niggling imperfections don't seem to matter) e'er more?

Sam

Also, most of the other images in this thread are now 404 forbidden, I can't see the others in the burst and I'm sure Mark will hound me till I do! =)

Also, it occurs to me that of the two or three people in the thread who actually dared to say they didnt like this shot, not one of them made any suggestions as to how they would change it or improve upon it. At risk of being called a heretic, there ARE a few things I would change were the image mine:

- I'd crop off about the bottom inch of dead space. The picture has a lot more drama for me almost square.

- There's a dark blotch just below the cheeks that I find distracting

- I'd tone down the green plants in the background just a TOUCH. They say the eye is always drawn to the lightest parts first, so I'd put the spotlight 100% on the daughter and not the beautiful bokeh. The awesome bokeh is competing with your main subject! Maybe pull the patio down just a smidge too, there's that big light area just above the face competing against it too.

- I'd experiment with a pinch on the mouth, trying for a deeper smile! The subject is obviously having fun and her expression just doesnt capture that 100%.

Anyway, cheers for something that 99% of us will never come close to, and one of the longest running threads on the forum.

Sam, I'm at a loss for words.

Let me inform everyone here that I never ;) asked, cajoled, importuned or requested Kadath to comment on this photo. In fact, the hundred or so others here who would come to his defense and state that I pm'd them are also lying. :D

As to your comments about the few who didn't like it, I'm not sure who they are, but rest assured I will move to have them immediately banned. :)

Next, your diatribe on how to make the photo better are taken in the spirit you intended: mean and downright nasty.;) After all, you sat next to me at a recent seminar. You saw first hand how completely inept I am in all aspects of photography. So, what do you expect?

hehehehehe

You were there? All I remember from that whole day was you mentioning you had the 1Ds2 and the rest was a blur!

Actually, don't let him get away with this false modesty folks. All day long Mark kept flipping through images which would have been mere snapshots to mere mortals like you and me, and yet they all seemed possesed of a certain "je ne sais qua" which, I'm guessing here, might have been pure photoshop & lightroom magic... For one brief instant I got a glimpse of a photo which was even BETTER than the one posted here, but Mark quickly slammed the lid on his MBP and said "Oh, you weren't supposed to see that!" I think he did some kind of MLP hypnosis to try to make me forget, it musta worked a little!

Doc, I must insist that you do an update to this shot.

It's so spectacular -- but now sadly aged.

Come on. Prove it wasn't a fluke. Show us your magnificence again!

It is my quest, to follow that star, not matter hopeless, no matter how far.

To fight for the right.

Without question or pause.

To be willing to fight for a heavenly cause.

For I know, that I'll always be true to this glorious quest.

That my arms will lay by my breast.

I'm doing my best, pal.

Belmondo, take note: T.D. directly violated the rules against bumping. But I love him anyway.

OK..first of all CONGRATS on a GREAT SHOT.
Second.. back on page 16 someone commented on how she (I think it was a woman) had never read 16 pages of ANY thread before...well it's now 24 pages and I am surprised at myself for reading every post...but this photo deserves it.
third..I have gotten a charge out of your progress...in the earlier posts you said you had very limited knowledge of photoshop skills and such, then much later - you offered some advice to the member who posted a few of his own pictures within your thread....I guess the class you spoke of taking must have paid off.

THAT IS A FINE PHOTO.

Well I just had to try it just once and came out with this catch. By the way great shot Mark. I just wish my background would have been better.

Mark, I would like to credit you for allowing me to try this shot and all. I entered my shot in a contest over at photocamel.com and won. I owe some credit to you for the great idea buddy. Keep up the good work.
