Hey guys, I am planning on going to whistler in a couple weeks (first time) to go skiing. I would really like to take my 5D + 24-105 up on the mountain, but have never attempted such a feat.

I'm looking for something that is going to be secure, but small and easy to ski with. Only need room for the camera and 1 lens.

Is there anything good out there for this purpose?

That pack looks very sweet. I'll have to look into that one.

I'm glad I looked!
I've skied a lot and sometimes carry photo gear. Not always well. :(

I think you can get some good help if Ben Jacobsen finds your post. If you want to find him, here's a link to a review that he did...

Hope this helps. I'll be watching.

Look at the f-stop Loka. Get the small ICU. It's what the bag was designed for and, currently, is the best thing out there for skiing or riding with camera gear. You can also use it with a hydration bladder.

The other alternative is to get a camera block that you can put in any backpack - mountain hardwear makes a good one.

Also some suggestions are Cotton Carriers or to wear a holster on your chest. I will do the CC in concert with a back pack but I'm not fond of the holster. I use the Cotton Carrier when I'm actively shooting and moving from spot to spot. Best thing out there - camera straps are aggravating when on skis.

With the exception of the f-stop gear stuff, there really isn't any decent camera backpack that you can expect to take on the mountain in any conditions.

F-stop makes great stuff, no doubt. But I think the Loka is going to be too combersome for just camera and one lens. I would like it to be as minimal in bulk as possible. The ClickElite Compact looks like a winner.

Thanks for the input though!

+1 for a F-stop with a small ICU if you only want to carry that much

I'd be very interested in hearing your opinion on it when you get it....

It's really not. It's about the same size as the normal pack I ski with (BCA Stash BC). There is a video on the web - Ian Millar might be able to provide a link - that shows a snowboarder wearing it while riding in new powder. Very trim.

edit: found the video - http://vimeo.com/8573841 (external link)

Here's a more about Ian and the Loka. Turns out he's an old Whistler hand.
