battery for 50D (stupid question-sorry)

OK, so I'm not overly impressed with the battery life with the 50D. I'm using the bp-511 that came with the body. In the manual it says battery life is better with the 514? Is this true? If so why don't they sell the camera with that battery, aside from wanting to make more money by making us buy them?

I bought myself two 2000mAh Opteka BP511a batteries for my 50D, and they both work pretty well for me!

Sterlingtek has good batteries ,The ones which I had bought are up 1 to 5 years old and are still going strong for my friend and his sister who has them now.

I'm confused, my 50D came with the BP-511A....and I bought a replacement BP-511A just in case. So perhaps they switched what battery it came with at some point?

They don't make the BP-511 anymore, its been replaced with the BP-511a. The Canon BP-511a is a 7.4V Lithium-Ion battery with 1390mAh. If you want battery that last longer you will need to buy an after market battery with more mAh, like the ones listed above or buy a vertical grip that holds 2 batteries.

I have bought 3 batteries for my 50D, and 4 for my old XTi and camcorder. I had one I had to send back as it wouldn't take a charge. Sterlingtek sent free shipping label to return defective battery and sent out a replacement ASAP. Great customer service.

I was saying that my camera came with the 511A. While the OP says his came with the 511. I was just surprised to see that they changed the battery that the 50D came with at some point.

i can find them veyr cheap online..I got 2 shipped for about 15 bucks

No the 511a came with the camera, but in the booklet it says the 514 is better. That's what I'm asking about. Can it be used, and is it longer lasting? I had the same battery with the 30D and that seemed to last about 25-50% longer with that camera. Before I sold the 30D I even used that battery for the 50D and it lasted longer then the new one.

If not I will look into the sterlingtek.

I also upgraded from 30D to 50D. The first day I had the 50D I found the battery went down lots faster than it had in the 30D.

I spent quite a lot of time looking at the menu screens that first time, and I think that was my problem. I turned off the auto display after shooting and now my batteries last just as long as they did in the 30D.

I think that nice big high-resolution screen draws quite a bit more power than the 30D screen.

Could that be part of your problem?
