I don't generally look to DxO Mark as a end all be all solution to choosing cameras but I found these results interesting. According to their testing, the new Pentax rates in the same league as several full frame cameras when it comes to dynamic range and noise performance. Thoughts?

Just thought I'd add the link to the DXO database.

I haven't had the chance to look yet and but will bit later. Saw your post - I use DXO Optics Pro for RAW conversions.

So did they compare the Pentax K-5 to full frame cameras, as your text indicates or, did they compare them to the 40D and 7D as the title to your thread implies?

Yea the new K-5 sensor performance is quite amazing. DR and ISO scores are very good. I am interesting on hearing opinions here. On Pentax forums they are claiming it king of the APS-C world, but there is more to a camera than DxO scores.

From the DXO rating is does seem that the K5 sensor has some advantages, but the real tell will be the IQ and DXO does not measure that.

If you go to the link then you can see that there are scroll down menus where you can choose what cameras you wish to compare. This includes many cameras, even some MF ones.

I agree. If I believed everything that DxO said, then Nikon would be kicking the crap out of Canon in general. I just don't see this playing out in real world results. If anything, I prefer the SOOC output of Canon in general, but that might just be a personal bias...

Totally agreed. I really don't trust DxO's methodologies. According to them, ANY Nikon would outperform ANY Canon in almost every aspect.
Now, I really REALLY don't see that on real world. Specially with the last models from Canon, as the 5D2 and 7D.

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

If you read DXOs technical writeups under "learn more", they do state that this is a measure of raw sensor performance and there are many other factors that go into the final image. It's useful data but should not be used as the only data.

I don't care what Pentax or for that matter Nikon, Sony, or any other manufacturer comes out with. I juggled the Canon and Nikon system and finally switched over to all Canon early this year. I won't be going through the system switch again.

DXO Mark completely ignores resolution. I'm not sure what its really useful for aside from bragging rights.

It's simply a measure of raw sensor performance. It's very useful in making your decision but should never be the only source.

I understand that DXO Mark metric attempts to isolate sensor performance from the camera but does it really tell you anything useful in term of practical photography? Is a Nikon D5000 really better than a 7D in terms of performance? If not, then what is DxO Mark really telling us? How does this metric translate into real world performance?
