Thought that was an optional accessory. Think the 2.8 comes with lens cap standard. f4 does not. (If you dont know I am kidding, please send the lens to me so I can re-attach the cap myself)

Lens look brand new as it should be, I bought the "USA" version. date code indicates that it was manufactured in Feb, 2005 in Canon's Utsunomiya factory. I emailed B&H yesterday about the missing front cap, no reply yet. BTW, I checked the box label, no mention of the front/rear cap either, only the ET-74 lens hood and LP1224 soft case are included. maybe it's an optional accessory? or QC problem!

I just looked at my box and it also only mentions case and hood... but it came with both front and rear caps. I would call B&H.

Mine came with both front and rear caps and the lens hood.

just as well. The canon lens caps are hard to use inside a deep lens hood, because the clips are out at the edge. These Tamron caps (external link) work much better.

I was wondering if B&H was selling returned/exchanged item as new? that would explain the missing cap. The lens look new but can't be sure since the box is not shrink-wrapped/factory-sealed.

David makes a good point ... the Canon and Sigma caps suck. They're designed for use without a hood. What a mission getting them on and off ... The Tamron and Tokina caps are great. I hate this kind of sloppy attention to details. I wonder if the designers ever actually take a lens and camera out and use it?

As to your lens cap ... even if they suck you should have one. My f4 came with one and so has every other lens I ever bought from cheapo to L class!

And one would want to put the lens cap on while using the hood, why?

Kenny, I often walk around with the hood and cap on, then take the cap off when I'm where I need to be, shoot, put the cap on, and walk somewhere else. works for me.
