When is too much too much? I figure its too much when it hurts job performance. But who am I to say?

I know I use the Internet a lot at work. I admit it. It’s nothing I try to hide. I know there are limits to usage and I measure that by getting my job done. Without the Internet I may have never learned all I could learn about VBA or excel functions like =sumproduct or formula arrays. By learning these things, I’ve actually sped up nearly all my job processes when it comes to financial analysis.

I’d die if I didn’t have the Internet. It keeps me going. The constant feed of information, the constant access to anything from the definition of a medical term like “AICD” or a word I hear on the radio like, “unctuous”, to finding what traffic looks like before I head home or what the Dodgers are doing next to destroy their chances of winning the division. If I didn’t have the Internet available, I’d best be doing a job like filling shelves with books at Barnes & Noble or serving French Roast coffee and Vanilla Latte’s at Starbucks. Some may laugh at my mention of these jobs, and those that do laugh may not understand that I’d rather be a bookseller and/or barrista at Starbucks than a financial analyst. Maybe I’ll do both at the same time - the book and coffee thing, not the analysis and book/coffee thing. So a job without Internet access, to me, is a job that I probably will end up hating till the day I quit or get fired. So thank goodness I have access to the Internet.

That being said, I got called into the CFO’s office due to an email he sent titled “Internet Usage” followed by, ‘See me regarding.’

Uh oh…

I’ll preface this by saying, my boss has been one of the best bosses I’ve ever had. There’s no doubt that my boss has gone above and beyond the call of duty to make me feel I am doing a good job (unlike the other two places I worked at) from getting a completely unexpected raise, encouraging my continued performance and support of my analysis, and giving me days off and telling me to go home early. You can’t ask for anything more from a boss. The bottom line, he respects me and my work and in turn I try desperately to give him a product that he can rely on. I DO NOT want to be a manager, I DO NOT want to be the ‘director’ of my department as I currently am filling the role as the ‘Interim Director of Managed Care”, and I DO NOT want to be a CFO. I am happy with my position, which keeps me on the even playing field of hopefully making it in FILM someday. Every position I advance to in this industry just means the Film career is getting further away.

I hate my job but I don’t ‘hate’ it. I don’t like what I’m doing that much but how can you hate it that much when you’re given so much for doing it? A good salary, praise and recognition, free lunches at month end and job flexibility.

That being said, I am prepared to leave my job in pursuit of a Barnes & Noble or Starbucks employment or pursue an Independent film on my own if I have to.

Back to the subject of Internet Usage.

I walked into my boss’ office and asked if I was in trouble for using the Internet. He said, ‘no’, he just wanted me to be aware that my usage was double compared to everyone else. I was like, do you want me to stop? He said, and I quote, “No, you don’t have to do that,” - just be careful to close up the websites and to monitor usage and don’t go to ‘bad’ websites (in not so many words). He mentioned he was ‘completely’ satisfied with my job performance and really just wanted me to be aware and sent me on my way. No warnings (although I heed this as a warning but he could have said, don’t use the Internet and didn’t), no real repercussion (yet), he even went as far as saying, quote, “I’m the same way myself.” Yes, I’ve walked into his office and saw him managing his Fantasy Baseball team, and the Associate CFO has sent me websites with cars on it when I mentioned I liked a specific vehicle. I’m not taking the attitude that if they do it so can I, I’m taking the attitude that if I can’t, I’ll just probably die and have to find another means of income. Is it Internet addiction? Or is it information addiction? Maybe a little bit of both. The bottom line, I need the Internet. It keeps me sane and aware there is an outside world out there other than my world of financial analysis in a small office with half a window and a view of the parking lot accompanied by the constant roar of the 101 freeway fifty feet from my window.

(I believe its measured by bandwidth and I uploaded a bunch of pictures to my photo gallery (external link) last week)

So there you have it. I knew eventually someone might say something, I knew that I am capable of spending my whole lunch period reading articles, visiting sites, and reading my email on the Internet. But when a deadline for work has to be met, it’s going to be met. I guess… and I hope… that’s really the bottom line.

Damn… I need a raise - and an iced mocha frap with a book to read.

We IT Internet-monitoring secrurity geeks love guys like you. You give us the basis we need to get toys and raises.
:-)

All kidding aside, slow down. I've been the guy to report guys like you to management, and management often freaks out. If you're double everyone else, then you're likely to be the example. "Hungry was fired yesterday. Too many porn sites."

Get a copy of your company's policies about Internet usage. Follow them.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Thanks for heads up. But I knew I was walking into disaster when I had nothing to do on friday and uploaded all my pics to my gallery. Till then, I haven't been talked to and I've been here a year.

Definitely looks like time to slow down...
It's great to have an understanding boss.. but all this time on the net.. much as I do it myself.. I know this is "vapor" it's nothing..

If there were any possibility of it jeopardizing my livelihood.. I could drop it cold turkey..

And frankly if I can do it.. ;)

In contrast, a few years ago I worked at a company where Internet access was extremely limited. The only access was via dial up modem, and there were only four of us (in a company of 120 employees) that were allowed to have a modem present.

Think about that!

If anybody else were caught with a modem in their computer, it was grounds for termination.

The modem that was in my office computer was some slow P.O.S., and of course that gets frustrating. So, I looked around at home, and I had a spare modem (that had already been retired there) that was better and faster than the office computer's modem. So, I brought that one from home to work and installed it. Great.

Then a couple of days later, the CEO got on a rampage and had the computer administrator lank out all of the modems that he could find, including the one that belonged to me. That is when I started looking for another employer.

Well, I work at an ISP, without Internet I wouldn't have a job at all. Noone will ever be able to measure how much porn surfing (Canon camera porn that is, I stay away from the real kind 'til I get home! Promise!) I do at work without me knowing, since I'm one of the few persons that can do that... :)
Safe to say though, I'm sure I spend more work time than anyone else here, surfing around, doing nothing. What's the worst that can happen? That I get bored. Because if I get fired I'll celebrate, that's how much I like my job, the place I work at is total crap. Unfortunatly they can't really do that, because my company doesn't have a policy about usage, and it's illegal to monitor people without their knowledge in this country anyway. Damn. :D

The thing is though, as the OP says... if one is hired to do a job, and you do it well without anyone complaining - why should someone tell you to stop using the Internet? I realise that this differs, but if I don't do something, noone else will do it for me, so if I'm lazy one day that's ok, as long as I deal with the most important stuff. Some days I've got nothing to do at all, some days I'll have to work 8 hours overtime.
Also, I (and many others) learn a lot from surfing around, things that I am helped by or even need in my daily job...

Anyway... erh, whatever. Can someone give me another job please! :P

Well I must confess I have no problem with my people using the internet on their breaks. We have an incredibly sophisticated fire wall and monitoring process but we are still at risk, but we accept that and try to mitigate that risk through technology (which doesn’t come cheap). However I really object to my people surfing the net when I am paying them to be doing work for me. It’s a fair exchange every month I give them money and every month they give me X hours of work. A nice sound business arrangement, which I feel they would be mad to screw up.

Once upon a time.. many long years ago (like forever) ... I was on my way up the career ladder. On one particular rung, (still low enough to be stepped on from above) I was responsible for the IT stuff in the company, and signed the contracts with a service provider, installed the internet connection for our organization, set up tunnels connecting our international offices, a laser connection to our building down the street (cheaper than leasing a line from Telekom).

Anyway...

one of my duties was to monitor and control usage, as we paid by the Kilobyte!!!!

During the course of my regularly scheduled duties, I monitored, tracked, profiled, and printed reports. Two extremely conspicuous spikes developed that not even I could justify, and it was becoming difficult for the management not to notice. I was tasked with identifying source, destination, and content.

I can only say that one of the users had a good ear for Abba, and the other had a eye for art forms.

The strange thing about this was that one person left the organization.. (he mailed almost as much data in Resume's), and the other was promoted... (had a good relationship with high level management)

My career continued without any influence from this little event, and I was eventually in a management position (different organisation, a bit closer to the top than the bottom rung) with more than just a little responsibility. (there were still people stepping on me though.. and a lot harder)

As our HungryWriter mentioned.. the internet is an all-consuming void that will relentlessly consume our hearts and minds and our time... (I know how long I sit on this forum)

.. and as Neil mentioned.. the time one spends browsing thru the local sports news / photo forums / music sites / virtual car showrooms / etc... ad infinitum is not contributing to the successful operation of the company you are working for.... unless you are a sports writer / photo journalist / music analyst / car dealer / etc...

put yourself in your boss's position.. and watch over your own shoulder during your work day.

I know everyone (more or less) hates their job.. but there are too many people hungry for work.. and too many bosses that are trying to cut costs.

It's simple. don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Just a suggestion.. but hey... what the heck do i know!

No? Damn! :P

Seriously though, had you worked where I do, you'd be the same way. Not a singel person on my job would be there if they could find something else, but I live in a small town, so no chance of finding jobs for IT people here. The management knows that of course, so they don't to sh!t to improve things.
Also, like I said, I do my job, our customers have never complained about my service (but do get a lot of praise) and sometimes I have to work my ass off. For nothing. That's why I'm bitter...
