Not sure if I composed this shot very well and it might be a little over saturated, but I still like it for some reason. Combined 3 exposures, spent about 30 min. messing with it in Photoshop. I'm still very much a noob so feel free to point out even my most obvious mistakes, I can take it :)

Thanks :) This is in Dubuque, Iowa. I was standing on 3rd level of a Steamboat, part of the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque which is off to the left of this scene. If you're ever passing through it's a nice museum and some interesting exhibits, affiliated with Smithsonian.

Anyone have any advice on how I can improve? I can't help but think there are things I could have done better with this shot, but I don't know what they are... should I go post it in a critique section? Thanks for any advice! :)

I think the composition is fine but, it looks like the horizon is leaning to the left a bit.

Thanks jdizzle... I added a pic to original post... does that second one look better? It's kind of hard to figure out because there's lot's of vertical lines, but they don't match... maybe a little lens distortion, or they're probably not perfectly straight up and down to begin with? :)

Very well done. I agree the second images is slightly better but both are very good. You should try to hit Dubuque in the early spring and the early fall. You can see huge floats of pelicans as they mirgrate north and south. Dubuque also has some very cool old brick buildings along the river. It's a neat place to shoot. I'm down in that neck of the woods almost every weekend visiting family. Thank you for sharing your images.

Thanks George! Now that I'm getting hooked on photography I'm thinking of some locations in the area I want to go visit again just for playing with my camera :) I think I remember Galena having some neat buildings in it also. I was in the Amanas, here in Iowa a few weeks ago and got a couple of interesting pics too. I need to get some practice with portraits, need to start doing a few paying gigs to help with this new expensive habit :)

Galena has some great spots. Grant Park on the banks of the Gelena River is a great spot, the old Depot and Grant's home plus the down town area. Great locations to bring a model as well. The Dubuque Warehouse District would be a great spot for portraits. I would love to spend a morning there with a good model.
It looks like you are doing well with you new habit. Perhaps it will develop into a paying venture. Good luck and keep shooting those great images.

I was just in Galena on Tuesday for work :) Snapped a few photos while I was there but didn't really get anything interesting... didn't want to get in trouble for playing while working either, lol. I kind of liked this shot of one of the restaurant signs...
