Alright, I've been looking for large (7 ft. ish) foam core boards to make a V-card for quite a while now with no luck. I've tried all the arts and crafts store around here (Indianapolis) and at random places like Walmart and so forth. I'm just wanting to get some to use for fill light.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I have same issue. Gave up and bought 4x8' sheets of white foam panel insulation (can get in various thicknesses). Paint one side matt black with a thick (to fill in small pores) LATEX-based paint. Cheap, easy to cut, works well. Only issue is unlike the paper-coated foamcore, most tapes won't stick to it very well (red 'tuck' tape used to tape vapor barrier plastic works pretty well, but it's, well, red), so just bear in mind.

Here Micheal's only has black 4x8 no white but their prices was like $40 a sheet. Aaron brothers has white but for $28 or so. Local theatrical supply stores has for < $20. Check if you got some in your area. My problem was fitting that 4x8 sheets in my CRV. And none of these will cut a bit off.

edited:- I have heard that small companies which make signs have foam core and maybe willing to selll for cheap.

Picked up 4x8 sheets of both white & black @ a local lumber yard.

I'm in Indy as well. There is a place by Michaels on 31 on the Southside called Hobby Lobby I think. Not sure if you've tried there as well. I'm not too far from there if you want me to go look.

You may want to try places like Home Depot, Lowes, etc - improvement places like that. I doubt they sell the exact foamcore you need, but in their insulation areas they often have lightweight, thin materials that may serve the purpose. As FeXL suggests that may be the answer. If that doesn't work then pursue Scott's Signmart suggestion.

I'm an Indy native, and now you've got me scrambling to remember where I used to get this stuff in that size! We got sheets every now and then for production work, they were 4x8.
Hobby Lobby won't carry them that large. 2x4 is the largest they've got.

Have you considered Coroplast? I picked some very large sheets up just a few days ago, scraps from a local plastic supplier, about $1.50 a pound. I want to say there was a plastics supply house on north Capitol (it's been a long time, sorry).

Yeah, I live like 2 minutes from there, and I've checked. The biggest they have is like 2x4.

I think I've heard of them. I might have to check them out! Thanks!

Thanks for the links!

Jon,

Here's a company in Zionsville that manufactures foamcore sheets/products:

Actually, now that I think about it..........

Is there any drawback to creating a large foam core sheet out of small ones and use tape for the hinges?
For example, what if I took 4 2x2 sheets and used tape for hinges? This would allow me to get a larger sheet but be able to fold and transport much easier. Would the small gaps in the sheets (to allow for hinge mobility) be an issue when the light is reflected?
Just curious ...

eh, probably not. Just try and get yourself some white gaffer's tape for the inside portions, at least.

I've been doing that for well over 30 years - I'd much prefer to tape together a bunch of 24"x 30" (or 24"x36") boards and be able to shape my reflectors than to have a rigid 4x8 foot board that won't bend (without ruining it) and hard to transport.

Good luck,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!
