When you have a multi-candidate situation with the camera automatically deciding the point, it is more complex. Half-press only causes the viewfinder to light up with the candidates, and the focus goes to "something." Then full-press forces it to make its decision, typically the closest candidate with contrast, and that drives the lens properly for that chosen candidate.
At least that is the way mine works in P mode.

Bob, this is starting to get very surprising to me - partly because it conflicts with every piece of documentation I've read, and partly because I can't get my camera to behave the way you're saying. You're literally claiming that focus lock (half press) doesn't actually lock focus when in multi-point AF mode. You're saying there will be another focusing action when the shutter button is fully pressed. That would also necessarily introduce a huge amount of shutter lag.
Are you REALLY sure your camera does that? Can anybody else replicate this result?
