I know its the wedding forum but I shoot everything in RAW.

Just good practice ...... you can always get a jpeg from RAW.

Same as others : I always shoot in RAW. (not only for weddings but also for family/friends ...)
I don't see the point in shooting in JPEG now that disk space is so cheap and conversion from raw to Jpeg is so easy.
And raw allow much more PP than Jpeg.

Stupid question.

But as I use the 1D I shoot Raw to a 32gb CF card and Jpeg to the 16gb SD card.

Always have a backup.

What I've been doing lately is Getting Ready is shot in JPEG, Ceremony, Portraits, and Reception in RAW. I just don't have enough cards yet (only 60 Gigs) to shoot in RAW full time with my 7D and I imagine I'll have the same problem if the 5DIII ever comes out (yes, I'm holding out for it). Though I accidentally forgot to set my assistants camera to RAW after shooting in JPEG for personal use at this last wedding and honestly she did a good job and there were no lost images due to this. I still wouldn't risk the quality of images on my personal skill level, no matter how good I think I've gotten.

i only have about 60gigs of cards too. i shoot different formats depending on the part of the day as well.
i'll also shoot alot of the dancefloor in jpg because it can be a lot of images and i don't need the raw information.
first dances/garter & boquet rituals in RAW though.

card speeds aren't as big a deal as they were before as even the "slow" cards are 30mb/sec now. you can pick up 8gb ones for $20 or less. i think it's a worthy investment over switching from JPG to RAW depending on what you're shooting. just put $50 aside towards more cards and you'll be fine i think.

yea, i actually didn't think about the numbers. yea, i'm using 5d2's as well and i don't think i've ever broken the 50gb mark for a single event. i guess some people aren't as conservative with their trigger fingers. :p

we shoot over 50gigs, but with 2 shooters, 7ds and 50d's.
and I don't think i'd use a $20 8gig card for paid work personally. maybe the dancing.. :)

what's wrong with 8gb cards? i'm using mostly 4gb and 8gb cards and i don't think 30mb/sec has ever been too slow to write the data.

I should add that my cards are used for both myself and my assistant (usually I give the assistant 20Gigs in cards and give myself 40). And 8 Gigs are crappy Kingstons that I want to retire (not due to lack of speed but because they constantly "miss" pics even though they are formatted to the camera every time... they're just faulty).

I am buying more cards eventually, just for my first wedding with the 7D I hadn't thought to get more cards and quickly realized "Oh crap! If I keep shooting in RAW I'm going to screw myself!" And then I sort of liked doing that way and just stuck with it for the next few rather than getting more cards. $30 is actually a lot of money for me right now. 3 cross country moves in 9 months and buying a house tends to hurt the pocket book quite a bit!

RAW only, usually the better You are, the less clicks You take - the less time You spend on converting RAW's to tifs/jpeg's after the wedding.

I understand shooting jpeg (or RAW + jpeg) in certain areas of photography (like sports or other press works) - where the speed of delivery is more important than quality (eg sending images straight from the field of the game).
Wedding happens once, and the quaility is important. I just can't let my cameras make all decisions (irreversibly) for me (and the cameras aren't bad - I shot weddings with 1 series).

nothing wrong with 8gb cards. but a $20 8gb card would worry me.
the one you linked is fine, but its 50% more than $20.. haha that's all i meant.
30mb/sec is generally fast enough for me.. but i use all extreme III's, or the new "extremes"

..that sounds awful. if it's for work, you should start asking the new companies to give you a relocation stipend or a signing bonus. :p

yea, i think those go on sale every so often and you can pick them up for $20/each. the reason i brought it up is primarily that i have a handful of 4gb extreme iii's from a year or two ago that are 30mb/sec. back then, i think i paid around $40 or more for each. ever since i switched my 5D's to 5D2's, i've been considering buying more cards, and i was shocked at how cheap 8gb 30mb/sec cards have gotten. since i've never had a problem with speed before, i feel like i can probably buy slow cards by today's standards and be perfectly happy while saving myself a bit of money.

since i'm in the school of thought that putting too many photos on single cards is asking for trouble, these 4gb and 8gb options are perfect for me.
