Hey guys I'm looking to replace the 18-55 EF-S kit lens that came with my XT with something a little better.
I'm looking at the 28-135mm IS, as I hear it's a great "walking around" lens.

That is an opinion I've NEVER heard anywhere....anything but...a quick search would bear that out.
Most everyone buying it with a body as a kit would sell it off...

Better to upgrade to the 18-55 IS version of what you have...

I had the 18-55IS and then the 28-135 later.
I liked the 28-135 better because it gave me higher keeper ratio.
Now I have the 15-85 as my walk around lens.

From my experience, I can say that these 3 lenses perform according to their cost:
$100 18-55IS (used) -> nobody sane enough would actually BUY a new 18-55IS
$200 28-135 (used) -> best price I could get when I sold my kit 28-135
$700 15-85 (new) -> might sound pricey at first, but it outperforms the other 2 lenses by miles

I liked the 28-135 more than the 17-50 non-vc but not as much as the 15-85 on crop.

For the ~$200 that they go for lightly used, it is a good buy. I picked up one that was sold because the owner didn't want it (it was their kit lens). Yes, the lens exhibits lens creep. But, I have found that during travel, it is a fairly versatile range.

I'm selling my Canon 28-135mm lens with hood. Mint condition. Need to get rid of it because I now have 3 really high quality lenses like the 17-55mm, and this is my cheapest one. If yer interested, it's only $200.

That is a good price for a nicely featured lens.

I've noticed that it is fairly soft in the corners of an image, but only at 28mm and only 1D's and full frame(film).

Now that is not bad. For any black and white conversions I shoot eith this lens at 28mm and iso 1600 or I use iso400 C41 black and white film.

It also focuses fairly close for a zoom at 135mm. Having both USM and IS might make you dislike the 18-55mm.

The 28-135 gets a bad rap. For beginners, I think that it's a decent walkaround lens. It's hard to get rid of the one I have. I actually paid $400 before I knew better when I first got my xTI back in the day. I just sold the one that came with my 7D last week. For around $250 for a new 28-135, you can't go wrong, especially since it serves as the "beater" lens that I don't mind my wife using on the 40D...

Some examples on a 40D...

And yet, NO ONE wants to buy this lens! Even at the dirt cheap price, people are still not wanting it.

well, there's a reason for that. The dirt cheap 18-55IS and the dirt cheap 55-250IS have better image resolution than the 28-135 - and other cheap lens!

There is more to a lens than being sharp. Sure, for the ef-s mount, the 18-55 and 55-250 are good lenses. But, I refuse to buy any ef-s lens. There is no reason EF-S lenses can not mount to bigger mirrored bodies. Im sorry, nikon and sony can do it...

"Lenses for APS-C sized sensors are optically designed to provide a narrower light cone to match the sensor thus providing superior resolution"

If you don't want the superior optics of EF-S type lens then just say NO
to sharpness and image resolution - your choice!

if was of course my kit lens with the purchase of the 7D. I really like the lens and it is a great all around lens but not quite wide enough on the crop.

Lots of keepers with this lens. Most bad shots I get are my fault and not the lens.
