Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #97
Black & White

The challenge this week is for a black & white macro image. Any subject is fair game, but your final submission must be processed in black & white (and shades in between, of course). Color images can be stunning, but so can a well done black & white photograph. Go get creative with your subject, composition, & lighting and show me a macro in black & white!

(Note: Your image does not have to be shot in black & white. You can do the conversion in your favorite post-processing application before posting.)

Challenge #97 begins when posted, and ends Monday at 7:00 PM EST (Eastern), November 15, 2010.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR camera
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image Posting Rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE Macro submission per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 7:00 PM EST (Eastern) Monday, November 15, 2010 (I think that's midnight, UTC on Nov 15th). Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Contest is closed, but my internet access is down. I can't really judge from my cell phone so I'll post results as soon as I can.

Sorry for the delay! Apparently my router decided to have a temporary conniption fit, but a reboot seemed to fix it for now.

John B and Stem - Is that a tomato? That's definitely a detailed shot of the stem and a nice contrasty photo.

Lester Wareham and High Key Blossom - Nice effect on that shot. Did you shoot it against the white background or adjust it to pure white in PP? Either way, I like the effect. I like the subtle drops on it as well.

Jason C and Vice Gripped - I really like how this image flows. The curves of the pliers lead you right into the nut. Just the right balance of detail and blur as well.

Robert Zurfluh and Morning Frost - Great detail in the leaf with nice depth of field. I can't quite see the frost, but I think it's a cool shot. Seeing the details in the veins of leaves always amazes me.

Warl0rd and Forks Composition - You should've put that in the weekly World Wide photo week challenge on the "Kitchen Utensils" theme for last week. It's an interesting idea and composition. I like the shadows with it, but at the same time they make it look a little busy. My eye isn't really drawn to one thing in the image as the subject of the photo though.

Randi and Lavender - I tried growing some of those once. They do smell nice, don't they?! I think it might've helped to post a little larger image. I couldn't really see much detail in the shot. Maybe try getting in a little closer to the part of the stem you want as the subject would help. The background stem also seems to be a little distracting since it intersects with what I perceive as the flow of the image.

Macroshot and Hosta leaf in b&w - I love the patterns in this. The lines of the leaf naturally lead the eye, and the shadows at the right help show depth. My only nitpick, and it's probably just a personal preference, is that I might've liked to have seen it on a slight angle (say from top right to bottom left) instead of purely horizontal.

You all posted some great images this week. Thanks to everyone who participated! You made judging tough.
I'm giving this week's nod to macroshot and his Hosta Leaf in B&W. I just really liked the flow and patterns of the image.
HMs to Jason C and Vice Gripped and to Lester and his High Key Blossom. Both are excellent images as well.

P.S. I just saw your note, Monty! You should've tried to get those white forks in! I might've needed my sunglasses though. :-)
(hmmmm... but you've given me an idea for something...)

Thanks again everyone, and congrats, macroshot!

I don't know that your "failed". You just made it rather abstract. :) White on white is tough! And hey, having fun is what it's all about, right?
