Took this shot in Las Vegas last week in front of Bally's. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's tried for this shot, but I could not get a sequence where there were no people on either walkway. I'd like to remove the people but I'm having a heck of a time.

At first I tried to cut and resize other like areas but that looked...bad. Then I tried cloning the left half then flipping the mirror image to the other side. I think that's where my lack of skills end. Here's the image:

Any tips?

I would clone the whole left half, flip it onto the right side...and then delete that layer in the areas that dont have people in it. Then you should have the very small group of people at the very end of the walkway on both sides and you should be able to clone those out using the background right around them.

Ok, gave it another try. There were some areas in the back I couldn't replicate so I just made them very dark. I think in the future I need to take shots of there area if I think I'm going to have to edit it just so I have all the parts to reference in a single image. Here's the result:

How'd I do?

Great edit...the only thing that bugs me (although very minor) is the tree. You can tell that it was a clone of the opposite side. Like I said, very very minor though. :)

Ditto as to what Fresh said about the tree. Why clone the entire left side? Just clone what you need to get rid of the people and leave the rest of the photo intact.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Only trouble I had was that the actual background didn't look that much different than the flipped image, but I wasn't perfectly centered so the two halves didn't line up perfectly. Here is my latest attempt to retain the differences in the two sides so it's not so obvious a mirror image.

Moved some of the background red lights around, retained the original right side edge scenery, noise reduction and sharpening.

How about now?

I think this is a great edit, much better without people and with some sign or assymetry. Nice photo.

Very interesting piece of architecture, whilst the after shot looks great, for the uninitiated to understand, having a human element helps as otherwise it just becomes a tad too abstract.

At first I was going to say remove the people. But once I saw the version without I like it better with the people....adds interest and perspective.

I'm actually not sure which I like better. I know I wanted to have a shot w/o the people but they wouldn't cooperate. This is at a minimum practice for using Gimp since I'm a novice with it. Maybe if I captured the Bally's sign in the shot it would have been better, so it's clearly the entrance to the casino.

I like the abstract nature of the shot and pinning it down to a real location - especially a casino would change it completely, not necessarily worse, but as it stands it could be so many things sci-fi to temple.

If you took multiple exposures of the scene its fairly easy to remove the people in Photoshop using the Median Stack function. It works be eliminating the elements that are not common to every photo.

Here's an example where Jeff Schewe and Martin Evening demonstrate how they shot the Pritzker Pavillion (The Bean) in Chicago: http://photoshopnews.com …mate-workshop-book-shoot/ (external link)

Scroll approx. half way down the page.
