Congrats on the new camera. What did you get? can't see it in your EXIF. I like the 3rd one but thin it would benefit from a bit more DOF/background blur and not centered.

the last picture might benefit from taking a picture of the tombstone at an angle (and zoomed in), so that it starts losing focus before the edge of the tombstone. Using some editing, you could desaturate it a bit as well and see if that added an effect you liked. It might make the picture more "somber" than it with regular coloring.

I like the first one and the last one the best.
The first one is the best compositionally imo.
I'm a novice myself but I heard that there's something you can do in Photoshop to straighten the furthest chimney to the left.
Unless of course you wanted the curve, if so then leave it alone.

#1: Good leading lines into the image. A little distortion on the first few stacks. I suggest cropping out the first stack.

#2: Not much interest here for me. Symmetry might have helped

#3: Nice subject. I would have opened up the f-stop to decrease DoF. Seems tilted. Bottom of subject is chopped off.

#4: The best of the bunch. Good leading lines. I might have re-arranged the flag on the foreground headstone so it didn't cover part of the name. Background is a bit over exposed. A better choice would be to have the sun behind you with light on the front of the headstones.

He means smaller in number. ;)

Smaller number = larger hole.

when you're ready to take it to the next level (you'll know it), get rid of kit lens and buy a fast sharp lens with fixed f-stop

it's up to you, but since you just started, you might want to wait to see what lens you will need (vs want).
Check craigslist, you can get a real bargain sometimes.

Hey, congratulations on your camera! I still consider my self as new to this too. I thought i would share a few thing that have helped me and still do.

1). A good lens to buy is the 50mm prime lens. Its not that expensive and the aperture open right up which helps when shooting in low light. Also its good for portraits too. It makes you think about what your shooting as you have to 'zoom' with your feet!

2). Photography Podcasts are great for picking up tips and explanations of how things work, really good to listen too if you travel a lot. 'Photofocus' and 'Digital tips from the top floor' I throughly recommend them.

3). Do a photography workshop, they really help with understanding the basics.

You didnt ask for the above, but thats what helped me and Im happy to share!

:)

NEVER get rid of your kit lens lol, it could come in handy, and depending on what type of photography you want to do, you might consider a lens with a lager aperature then the F4...as a matter of fact i suggest not buying a lens until you master that nifty fifty of yours.... that lens will take you a long way, and learning on it can save you money on future lenses....Welcome to photography, HAVE FUN!

#1:

Lot of barrel distortion, plus the upper portion of the left-most stack has been chopped off. Would have looked better composition-wise if you had managed to keep the full stack, using the tops as the leading edge into the frame.

#2:

I agree about the previous symmetry comment...just what I was thinking when I looked at this. There's too much of the left stack and not enough of the right stack, which throws off the balance. Would have worked much better if the two side stacks were equal.

#3:

I think the DOF in this one is fine as is...I can clearly see separation between the statue and the background. The image is just too static with the subject smack in the center, plus the base is chopped off. Not much to work with here.

#4:

You did well here with the backlighting, but agree with the previous comments. Also, the flag on the right edge is a bit distracting. If I had to guess, I'd say that you had this cropped out in the VF, and the problem lies with Canon's less-than-100% VF's...you don't get what you see in the VF (you always get a little bit more). Just need to be aware of this when composing your shots (unless you have a 7D).
