I forget the company, but I think it was last year that they gave users 24 hour notice before their servers were doing down for good.

They had some big names using them too. Like, really big names. Anyone remember the site?

I found this article on PCWorld Com:

http://www.pcworld.com …rage_site_shuts_down.html (external link)

Apparently it's worse than we realized if this article is accurate. They are saying that in the prior 10 months to the writing of the article (May 14, 2009) more than 7 online storage companies shut down. One firm, Digital Railroad gave its customers a 24 hour notice prior to destroying their images.

The whole article makes for interesting reading.

Digital Railroad. That's the one I was thinking of. One of the articles said they had 65 agencies that were using them.

I prefer my home server.

Don't get me wrong - cloud storage can and does work.

You just have to be very careful about the vendor your select, be aware of their TOS, and have your own backup strategy in case their service is discontinued. At $50/yr you will likley get very good service because (A) you are paying a few, as opposed to free sites, and (B) IMO Google would be careful about doing anything that could attract negative publicity.

That's expensive. My prebuilt HP Mediasmart with Windows Home Server cost me about $600 to date. That's for the box, with the OS and two 1TB drives. That's 2.5TB of redundant storage with a good way to make backups of my important data. Now that prices have come down, I'll be purchasing 2 2TB drives for less than $300 and adding them in. That's less than $900 for 6.5TB of space. I currently am using 2TB and I can also use the server for other thing like streaming movies and such.

If there was by some chance no discount, that would end up costing me $512 a year with increased cost as I needed more storage.

Reliable online storage facilities can get expensive. If you want online storage, configure your firewall/router so you can access it remotely.

If your worried about online storage companies losing your stuff just call up Akamai and pay for their services. Until then, 1TB externals are really the way to go. They are under 100 bucks anymore

VI, do you use the internet feature where you can log into your WHS? How do you like it? Is there anything you don't like about WHS?

I have an unRAID server right now but am thinking about making the switch to WHS (either v1 or the new Vail). I'll be using a home built PC though, my old photo computer.

"Simply point and click to open and edit your files as if they were already on your computer with the Jungle Disk Network Drive."

$3/month.

5GB Free

$0.15 per GB thereafter

No charge for data transfer/request

"Unlimited storage at 15¢ per GB
Pay only for what you use – no tiered pricing
No minimum monthly storage fees
30-day risk-free money back guarantee"

"Securely backup your files faster using less storage space
Share files between multiple computers from anywhere
Easily sync files between multiple computers
Unlimited cloud drive storage
Secure AES-256 encryption with a key you create and control"

I'm not paying $150/month to backup my stuff. That buys me a 2TB drive AND a safety deposit box at the bank every month.

I actually had to delete my Windows Backup "file" on my external backup as Windows Backup started acting screwy. I was moving to just using Robocopy to do a simple mirror of the main drive, but the backup file took up too much room (I was more than half-way through the 1TB drive) so to get Robocopy working, I needed to clear the drive....

It was a nerve racking ~6 hours (as I didn't have a backup) while Robocopy did its thing and copied everything over.

I was relieved to find everything copied over by the morning.

I was a pain getting it setup, and the PnP setup must be turned on. It's nice once it's hooked up though. I mean, when I use it.

I have a ton of movies and music on my server though, so I use it to stream to my PS3 and computers in the house, without having to have 30GB of music on each device.

Drive management is soooo easy. You just plug in your drives, add them to the pool and they're ready. You don't have to mess with drive letters and such. My storage organization is fairly simple, so I'm just keeping "Photos" folder, folders by year, and then the folder containing the folder with the date and person's name/event listed.

Good to hear! My unRAID server is similar. You setup "shares" and don't have to worry about drives and drive letters. The server appears like one big drive. I would stick with it, but I find that my lack of linux knowledge will haunt me if something goes wrong. I've already had one issue that I'm still trying to recover from. Since I have familiarity with Windows I think WHS is the way to go.

What are transfer rates like? I only get about 11MB/s with my unRAID server since it has a parity drive. For this reason I moved photos back to my local machine, but kept all my movies, documents and music on the server.
