can you post a few examples?

I'm betting it's an issue with the shutter though...

The most likely cause is shutter failure. It could also be related to
using a flash with the shutter speed set to over the max flash sync speed (probably 1/200 of a second)

or... it could be something as simple as using a lens with a large hood, or a long body, and the on-camera built-in flash... the on-camera flash will hit the lens, giving you a shadow over the picture.

Probably your shutter. Could also be that you were shooting with flash and using a shutter speed higher than the rated flash synch speed of your camera.

You need to give more information about how you're shooting the picture so we can more accurately diagnose the problem. You need to include camera settings, flash or no flash, lighting conditions, etc. You should also include an image with EXIF intact.
