From another current thread:

I've been using low-end Epsons for a while, from the R260 up. Right now I'm using an Artisan 810, which is a bit more expensive, but has some valuable additional office features. The least expensive Epson that prints discs right now is the Artisan 50 (which in my area is only availble by mail order).

I will say this about the Artisan 810--it's definitely the most refined of Epson's cheap printers. It has a built-in disc holder (no more issues getting an accessory holder properly lined up); it appears to be much more economical with ink; this is a big one--they seem to have largely solved the problem of ink drying in the print heads after a couple of weeks of idleness. I've had to toss a couple of earlier Epsons for that fault alone.

A couple of years ago, I did a permanency test with the then-new Claria inks and Taiyo Yuden silver inkjet discs. I printed four identical discs and duct-taped two of them to a south-facing window that got full daytime sunlight; the other two I put into black disc covers in a drawer. I left the discs in the window for a full year, then compared the discs. The discs that had been getting daily sun for a year showed only a very slight metamerization and no fading compared to the discs stored in darkness. Inasmuch as discs should be expected to be kept in cases anyway, I consider Claria dyes safe enough for this purpose.

I've also tried a couple of the low-end HPs that print discs, but I found their image quality distinctly inferior to Epson. There are some Canon printer models that will print discs, but Canon only sells them with the necessary driver and rollers outside the US. You can check eBay for bootleg items to convert US-sold Canon printers to handle discs.

I strongly advise using a 3rd party label maker--the software sold with printers is always weak. Moreover, if you changed to a different printer manufacturer, your old label files would be orphaned. I second the suggestion of Acoustica Label Maker (http://www.acoustica.com/cd-label-maker/ (external link)). It's a very powerful and easy to use program for less than US$22.

Acoustica also prints to Lightscribe drives as well as pretty much any other printer, so you can go both ways and use the same software with the same files. A big plus for Acoustica in my book is that it's easy to adjust for different print area measurements of different discs nearly on the fly (especially that pesky hole diameter, which never seems consistent between disc brands).

Now that's dedication! Thanks for sharing these insights.

I have an old Epson R300 that I use to print my clients discs. Works brilliantly.

I have an Epson R280 to print on CD/DVD and it works like a charm. It looks very professional. I only had one incident where there were lines printing across the disc. I cleaned print heads and they were gone. I actually paid $29 for mine about 2.5 years ago.

Pretty intriquing. Any issues with the ink smearing?

I have not had any issues at all.

I use an artisan 810... makes SICK dvd prints!!!

The 810 looks slick. If I did not get mine off CL for $50 new, I would consider it:)
