Hey everyone,

Tried to shoot tethered, and discovered that the USB port on my 5d II is inactive... My old 50D shoots tethered just fine with this computer, so I know its not a computer problem...

I know on the old 5d Classic that the USB port did not work under certain print modes, However I do not see that menu on the Mark II... Anyone else have this problem? I always use a card reader so I had not noticed up till now.

Is there any chance your software needs to be updated in order to recognize the 5D2 for tethered shooting? Have you tried just downloading photos using the USB cable to help confirm whether the port really is bad?

All the softwares up to date, the USB port just does not seem to be getting any power period...Doesn't even connect to download images...

Right now im trying to see if theres any thing else I can do besides send it to Canon.

The new USB-ports are combined USB and video. Sometimes make certain cables a bit unreliable. Have you tried a different cable?

Stupid question, but does the USB port work with any other devices i.e. a thumb drive?

What OS are you running?

Just because other USB storage devices work, it doesn't mean the camera is automatically at fault. Each OS should recognize the device for what it is, not just as a storage device (even though that is what it is).

For example, Windows 7 has issues with my Canon Hf10. It is 100% OS camera driver related; nothing is wrong with the camcorder.

(assuming you run windows) Also, go to control panel, admin tools, computer management , disk management and see if the device shows up there. If it does, you have a drive letter assignment problem.

Try the camera in another PC and see if it just appears.

Like others said, make sure your cable functions. maybe try it with another camera.

If you test all other options, then assume the camera is at fault. Maybe take it to a camera shop and just have them try to hook it up before sending it in.
