Hi Everyone- I'd appreciate your help since I'm starting to obsess! I'm looking for the next logical addition to my lens kit. I'm looking to spend ~$500 or less and prefer new. I plan to stay with a crop camera for at least the next few years as I don't feel that is limiting me at this point. I use the 30 1.4 about 50% of the time, 70-200 about 30% of the time, and 18-55 20%.

Here's what I have
Camera: Canon T2i
Current Equipment: Canon 18-55IS, Sigma 30 1.4, Canon 70-200 f/4 IS, 430 EX Flash
Sold 28-135, 75-300, 50 1.8 to fund 70-200 and 30 1.4 and has been huge upgrade.

Primary Photos: Kids Portraits, Kids Sports (football, baseball, basketball starting soon)
Secondary: Vacation type shots of architecture and landscape

Perceived needs/questions:
- should I replace kit lens: maybe with 17-50 Tammy (is this better solution than the current 18-55 IS and 30 1.4 combo)
- should I get longer prime: 85 1.8 but can 70-200 f4 is do this (indoor bball) with higher ISO?
- should I get UWA: Sigma 10-20, Tamron 10-24 wonder how much I'd use?
- should I focus on improving mid range: Sigma 24-70 or Tamron 28-75 (had 28-75 with old XTI and returned for 28-135) my most used focal range in my library

Any thoughts... I'm all over the place.

Canon 7D, 430EX Flash, Tokina 11-16, Canon 17-55 IS, Canon 18-55 IS, Sig 30 1.4, Tamron 28-75, Canon 85 1.8, Canon 135L, Canon 70-200 f/4L IS

those.

f/4 is not going to be enough for indoor action sports so 85 1.8 is the best you can get (or 100 f/2) given your limited budget.

17-50 tamron is a good option too, yes in my option it can replace those 2 as general walkaround.

5D3 and a few lens

Well to flat out say that the 70-200 f4L won't work as an indoor Bball lens isn't fair. I've done it before, but then again, I was also using strobes. I wouldn't suggest it as a basketball lens.

Now the 85mm f1.8, that's a whole other story! For the past two seasons I've been shooting my son's games. Last year I took a huge step forward by starting to use strobes and getting a 24-70 f2.8L as my primary Bball lens for under the basket action. This past spring I got myself a 85mm f1.8 and recently shot some ambient light BB with some pretty good results. Of course I had to back off from my usual spot near the baseline key area. But not much. Using a prime to shoot Bball is a bit funny after using the 24-70L, but I quickly got used to it. But just know that there are a few shots that you just aren't going to get because you have no ability to suddenly widen out. But still a great, economical, indoor, sports lens!

I recently saw one available at www.KEH.com (external link) for $365 in great condition. New they sell for around $400. I bought mine used from KEH and have been very happy since.

A recent shot of my son using the 85mm f1.8 and ambient gym light. ISO 1600

And another at a different gym, Canon EF 85mm f1.8, ISO 3200

Which do you use more of the 85 1.8 or 24-70?

Given my current setup do you think the 85 1.8 or 24-70 for sports and portrait stuff?
