Lens FL is defined for focus at infinity.
If your tests involved any other distance, it's possible that the reported FL may be accurate!

I shot some where the focus was at infinity with no difference.

Is it still under warranty?-- If it's only that one focal length in the EXIF not showing correctly and the warranty has run out, why bother sending it in?

No it's 2003 lens. I am afraid it's not only the EXIF. Optically lens is not reaching 17mm.

Thats strange that the lens won't go to 17mm or won't register 17mm. I just looked up my shots with the 17-40 on a 5D2, and the EXIF definitely shows 17mm on mine. Good luck with Canon.

I looked up the EXIF on a couple of mine and it also says 17mm on the low end and 40mm on the high end so I would say return yours and get another one.
Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I checked some from my previous 17-40mm and there was no problem in reaching 17mm. In fact this was one of the most used FL. I am shipping the lens to Canon on Monday. If the service charge is reasonable seller is going to take care of it. If it's optically reaching 17mm but reporting as 19mm I don't care and will keep the lens.
