^^^ tough crowd!

The FoV of a 100mm, especially on a crop sensor, is going to give you a pretty tight window. You can do it, but it wouldn't be my first choice for the type of foreground/background juxtaposition that (I think) you're talking about. The shot below was taken with a FF (5D) - the buildings are well in to the background and the pylons in the (relative) foreground are still pretty far away from my position.

Looking at Hyperfocal calculators, your "foreground" will have to be at least 55 feet away at f/16 to maintain focus on the mountains, as well. Again, you can do it, and with spectacular results, but you'll be counting on mother nature to line up your shots and give you a place to stand.

Bill is my name - I'm the most wanted man on my island, except I'm not on my island, of course. More's the pity.

Some great images here. I just picked up this lens and can't wait to try it. Hopefully I can get some images up later this week.

Indeed, 100mm is going to be very tight on my camera, but I'll be bringing my trusty Tamron 17-50 along, so I'll be covered for wide(r) needs.

I imagine 100mm would works fine though as NZ abound of vast landscapes. Focus on flowers/green foreground and blur mountains in the background should turn out pretty well too, so not worried about having to stop down a lot, I could probably shoot around f/8, f/11 for that effect. I hope the longer focal length and 'compression' it produces will help to keep the background big enough compared to the foreground.

Ah, can't wait to get this lens and go on holidays! hehe

The 100mm macro is awesome for pretty much everything you could use a 100mm lens for. Super sharp.

EF 100mm f2.8 USM (not the L)

I have mostly used this lens for macro so far, but did venture out last week to take these photos.
I have not taken any portrait shots with this lens yet although plan to very soon.

Finally got this lens. Here's one of my first shots, taken on xmas day (a bit noisy as I shot at ISO 1600 on a 400D).

Here's a recent landscape shot that I captured with my 100mm macro (non-IS). It's a great lens, although I don't seem to use it all that much. I am more of a standard to wide angle or longer telephoto kind of guy, I guess.

Just got back from a 10 days trip to new zealand's south island.

This lens also works for action and BIF :)

Very nice. Hope you are enjoying your new lens. Looking forward to more pictures from New Zealand.

I had to dig a bit to find [Somewhat] semi-action with the 100mm. Here's what I found:

and then a butterfly wandered by (not macro but 100% crop):
