How to control Reds in 5D2

So I've had my 5D2 for a little over a week and so far I love it! It's an incredible camera. One problem that I've noticed is that if I shoot something with a lot of red in it the colors become way too saturated. I was able to fix it up a little by processing in Lightroom...but it's still not perfect. Any advice on how to keep reds at bay? I have a shot of a flower from the same plant (albeit less harsher lighthing) shot with velvia 50 and the colors are perfect....but my poor 5D2 blows out the reds badly.

I had the same problem with my 40D, 1D MKI and now with my 1D MkIV. I deal with it in PP, I mostly shoot in RAW. I deaturate the Red channel just a bit.

Ya same here, When i shoot red roses it drives me nuts. It over saturates it.

I do the same depending on the image. You'll also probably notice that it underexposes by 1-2 stops. It might like right in camera but the RAW file is underexposed when I pull the CR2 into LR. (at least for me) so I force myself to compensate for it while shooting.

Seems an inherent issue with Canon sensors. Like everyone else i try to bring it down in post but sometimes you cannot recover lost detail.

Yea I find that I can correct for it somewhat in post but soemtimes its hard. It's like if I bring down the red too much the rest of the picture looks bad...Playing with the luminanace for red in LR3 helped a bit, it brought back some of the detail in the red areas that seemed to be completely lost before the change. I guess we all just live with it then...

Also another thing I've noticed is that if a shot is underexposed, or if there are regions of a shot that are underexposed or dark sometimes there are many red pixels visible in these areas. It is a little annoying...I can fix it with noise reduction though for the most part. I don't really know how to avoid this.

weird but i dont have issues taking pics of red clothing but only red flowers. Lol. It may be the gloss+red from the flower.

Just work in layers if it's affecting the whole image when you adjust the reds. IE: If you're shooting a red car infront of red bricks and one looks more saturated than the other then you can just lower the reds and apply a layer mask to control just the reds on the car.

did you try to create a custom color profile for your camera (for instance with an x-rite passport color checker) to apply automatic color profile correction in your workflow?

I've done a profile for each of my cameras at all ISO settings, and lightroom color correct all my pictures automagically.

What picture styles are you using? I find "faithful" best. Landscape is way too saturated for my taste.

In camera I have altered the presets so saturation and contrast are both adjusted down, this does not affect the actual RAW capture, but it opens in DPP with those settings and from there I am in control.

I do agree that, red, flowers are a problem and I don't have a satisfactory solution. Yellow ones are almost as bad.

I find the same thing (obviously). Most of the time for me though it's dads at weddings with bright red faces. I'm thinking this is a similar problem. If it's not even remotely related, here's a free tip to not make old men look like beet-red alcoholics: Move the red hue slider to +17 or so, red be gone!

I dont know if its fair for us to expect the camera to automagically figure out what to do in this scene. I have been taught to check my histogram and use exposure compensation to compensate for any clipping I may be getting in that particular spectrum.

Yes, but if you expose the red flower properly (no clipping), you may find the rest of the image extremely dim....so it seems to be a sensor/hardware anomoly, making it more sensitive to red, at some level (might not be linear).
