Hello all,

About 2 months ago I bought a 24-105L + 7D and since then I took many photos, but none of the photos are as sharp as the ones I saw with 24-105L + 5Dmk2 on reviews pages.
I didn't have a chance to try my lens on a 5D body and the dealer where I bought my gear tells me that the lens are fine (I sent them many photo samples where I thought the lens were underperforming)

Is this lack of sharpness related to the body I'm using or is it a real concern?

*I did some tests with the IS off and it is still not sharp.

Regards,
Hugo

I will say that mine is sharper on my 5dMKII compared to when i used it on the T1i. What are you comparing the sharpness to? what other lens. Maybe you can post a pic and well see if its normal. Its not the sharpest lens but its still pretty sharp.

People here will need sample photos, preferably 100% crops with full EXIF data, along with any other information you can provide about shooting conditions, in order to tell you anything useful about what's going on with your lens and camera. In general, there is no issue with getting extremely detailed and sharp images with a 7D and 24-105.

As already stated, you need to post some examples with the exif intact. It's my opinion that in the vast majority of these types of posts that it is user error rather than faulty equipment.

Dont compare your image to the ones posted online. Im sure they do some PP which includes sharpening.

That shot doesn't look to bad to me, around the text is a little noisy but it looks like compression noise rather than being camera related. Do you have a sample of something with a bit more texture or something we can gauge sharpness on a little better?

I agree with realmike15. If you really want to test focus/sharpness, you need to use a high contrast target in good light with a lot of detail included in the image that will give a real idea of how sharp the image is. Take a look at this thread for some ideas about testing focus:

Those individual hairs look plenty sharp to me. So far, I haven't seen any indications of a problem.

Are you shooting RAW or JPEG? If RAW, what RAW converter are you using and what are your sharpening settings?

Thanks for all the replies and the link, I will do more tests as explained on that link just to make sure.

I'm glad more people think it is fine the way it is, you know dealers, for them everything is fine!

Thanks again
Hugo
